This
tutorial will teach you how to create an image which appear as though it
were a blob of paint. It will involve:
- layers, - the magic wand tool, - the paint brush tool, - the cut out function and - the add drop shadow function. Below is an example of the finished product. |

Step
1:
Open up your image and increase the colour depth to 16 million colours. Here is the image I will be starting with. |

Step
2:
Create a new layer by clicking "layers - new". Now use the paint brush tool with the foreground colour set to black and the background colour set to white. Set the following options: - Shape: round - Opacity: 100 - Size: 30 The others are not important. Draw over the important parts of the picture that you want to include in the paint blob. Add some spots as well. |

Step
3:
Now use the magic wand tool and set the following settings: - Match Mode: RGB Value - Feather: 3 - Tolerance: 0 Select the black blob and hold shift while selecting the spots to include them in the selection as well. Now click "edit - clear". This will make the blob disappear and you will be left with the shape of the blob selected. Select "layers - merge - merge all" so that you can have the background selected in the same shape. Invert the selection by clicking "selections - invert" and clear it again. You should now be left with the background in the shape you just created on a white background. |

Keep the image selected and click "image - effects - cutout". Make sure the "fill interior with colour" box is not checked. Enter these values: - Shadow Colour: white - Opacity: 80 - Blur: 15 - Vertical Offset: 6 - Horizontal Offset: 6 |
Step
5:
After you've done that, use the same function with the following values: - Shadow Colour: black - Opacity: 100 - Blur: 15 - Vertical Offset: -6 - Horizontal Offset: -6 You should have an image like the one below. |

Step
6:
Keep the image selected. Now we went to add a shadow for a more realistic 3D paint blob. Click "image - effects - add drop shadow" and enter the following values: - Shadow Colour: black - Opacity: 100 - Blur: 10 - Vertical Offset: 4 - Horizontal Offset: 4 You have now completed your paint blob image. |

Instead of using a paint blob, you could use shapes such as hearts using the "Symbol" font and placing it in a new layer the same as the blob. You can play around with all sorts of shapes so experiment. The basic rectangle looks good as well. |
