Hong Kong harbor has a lots of traffic and to insure other vessels will see the Tom Green County she was lit up like a Christmas tree and just as spectacular.
Looking at the shoreline frequently brings questions to mind about what is it like over there, or what is there to see or do over there." At other times it brings nostalgic thoughts about other shorelines that have been viewed in the same way.
This is a view of the destroyer ladder that leads to the LCVP landing platform that is at water level. When returning from liberty you had to ascend this ladder to get back onto the main deck of the ship. Dress shoes had leather soles. Sometimes the evening dew made the rungs wet. Sometimes returning sailors had a little too much rest and recreation. All of this together could make getting aboard a real adventure.
Of course there was someone with the quarterdeck duty that could only look at the shoreline and enjoy his secret thoughts until the crew started returning from liberty. On some occassins this duty required getting someone to operate the cherry picker to lower a cargo net into the LCVP to "assist" some shipmate back aboard that felt the destroyer ladder was too much of a challenge. Tom Murphy and Ray Yettick had the duty on one of these nights as shown in the photo that follows.
