Thanks, so much for your website on Vauban!
I lived in Maastricht for 3 years and have actually seen, held and photographed original maps which had been overdrawn in red ink showing the progress of the sappers and damage to the
city walls. A fascinating individual and great engineer.

As France is my favorite holiday-land, I had to stumble over Vauban's works sooner or later. First I saw Fort de Salses, later the amazing Fort liberia.
So I decided to try to create an internetsite on Vauban. It seems you beat me , and very succesfully at that.
Keep up the good work!

After stumbling across Vauban fortifications up and down France, I am finally looking him up. The site is a real pleasure for me. Thank you for all the work you have done.

I'm happy to have stumbled upon your website. I
will be visiting Neuf Brisach in a few weeks (as
well as other military-history sites in Alsace and
the Vosges). As the former publisher of MHQ
(Military History Quarterly) I can recommend an
article on Vauban in one of the magazine's early
issues, vol. 1 no. 2, Winter 1989, by John A.
Lynn, who is a professor at the University of
Illinois and probably this country's (USA, that
is) leading scholar on 17th-century warfare. Best

I am not a military man, nor a military historian. I never heard of the name of Vauban until I saw his fortifications in Queras, Mt. Dauphin, and Briancon. Then I realized that this was a man who should be acknowledged by history, and that I never befor
heard of him.
Keep up the good work of making the name of this great genius known to the world!

I discovered this excellent website upon return from a visit to Avallon, France, which is protected by a fortress in remarkably good condition -- suposedely by Vauban. Is there any information available on this fortress, either its construction or its mil
tary significance?
By the way, I beleive that the artist of the Vauban painting shown on the hopepage is RIGAUD, Hyacinthe, 1659-1743, not RIGEAUD. Rigaud also did portraits of Louis XIV and Louis XV.
Keep up the good work.

Amazed your bibliography does not include the superb recent biography of Vauban by Anne Blanchard (Fayard, 1996).

An intersting site which I have not yet been through in detail - my interst stems from the book
"A Manual of Siegecraft and Fortification" by Sebastien LePrestre de Vauban translated with and Introduction by George A Rothrock, Ann Arbour, The University of Michigan Press, 1968, Library of Congress Catalog card No. 67-25346, which is obviously an ori

I've only just started searching the Net for fortifications' groups. Two months ago I completed a dissertation (thesis) on a military architect from the Baroque period,Mederico Blondel, so I've gotten really hooked on the fortifications/artillery scene.
ust waiting for the viva. Dissert was presented to the International Institute for Baroque Studies, University of Malta. I read a lot about Vauban and have become a real fan. Some of Vauban's ex-apprentices came to work on Maltese fortifications. I adm
re Vauban because, as you say, he always strove to improve and save the lives of his soldiers. I hope to make my own hero, also a French military architect, well, nearly famous! Would like to learn even more about Vauban, if that's possible. Never visi
ed France but wish to in the near future and wish to plan a 'fortifications holiday'! Know a few people in Malta who are in the business of fortifications and would like to know more about our hero.

Have just discovered your website. Great news, a much needed facility! I am a Vauban fan, having travelled quite a bit in France including visting Saint Leger and his tomb near Avallon. Will be staying near Rocroi at Easter. There seems a dearth of litera
