HISTORY OF USS EBERLE (DD430)
The USS EBERLE (DD430) was built in the yards of Bath Ion Works Corporation, Bath, Maine. December 4,1940- Commissioned, Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. December 4,1940 to March 15,1941- Shakedown. April,1941 to August 1941- Patrol duty off Bermuda. October, 1941 to December 7, 1941 – Assigned to North Atlantic convoy duty to Iceland. December 7,1941 to November 1,1942 – Assigned general convoy duty in Atlantic and Caribbean areas. On September 15, 1942, three definite submarine contacts were attacked in the Trinidad area without sufficient evidence resulting to merit classification as sunk. November 1,1942 to November 15, 1942- Operated as a unit of Task Group 34.8 and participated in the initial landings at Mehdia, French Morocco, North Africa on November 8, 1942. The Eberle was credited with destroying a searchlight and a 75 mm gun battery at the initial landings. November 15, 1942 to March 31,1943- Attached to Fourth Fleet, operating on patrol and convoy duty in South Atlantic area. On March 10, 1943, as a unit of Task Group 23.1, the destroyer participated in the location and interception of the German blockade-runner Karin. The Eberle was ordered to board. As the boarding party reached the deck, demolition charges exploded, killing some of the party outright. The surviving members persisted in their efforts to save the ship and obtain information until the position became untenable. Surviving members of the boarding party (two officers, five men) and 72 prisoners were recovered from the water. April 1,1943 to February 19,1944- Assigned general convoy duty Atlantic-North African area. February 20, 1944 to November 30, 1944- Attached to the Eight Fleet and assigned patrol and convoy duty. On April 20, 1944, while operating under SOPA Anzio, Italy the Eberle broke up an attack on the anchorage by German E-boats, sinking one and damaging three others which were subsequently beached by their crews. On August 15, the destroyer participated in the initial landings on Southern France, at Cavalaire Bay, as a unit of Task Group 84.7, assigned primarily as a fire support vessel. On August 9, the ship participated in the bombardment of Toulon, France, and on August 21, in the bombardment of the Island of Porquerolles. A landing force was sent in to investigate German troops displaying a white flag on this island. Fifty-eight prisoners were taken. The prisoners stated that the bombardment had destroyer the boat in which they intended to escape from the island. On the following day the landing force was sent ashore where it received the surrender of 14 additional prisoners. During the bombardment, hits were made on piers, boats, barracks, and a fuel dump. December 1,1944 to April 1,1945- Assigned to convoy duty between the United States and Mediterranean Ports. April 1,1945 to April 23,1945- Detached from convoy duty April 23, 1945 to May 3,1945- Underway conducting anti-submarine sweeps as a result of the sinking of an ‘Eagle" boat off the end of the swept channel, Casco Bay, Maine. Swept Gulf of Maine and area off Cape Cod. May 3,1945 to June 8,1945- Completed various training exercises at Casco Bay, Maine and Navy Yard availability in New York. June 8, 1945 to July 20,1945- Enroute to Pearl Harbor, T.H. July 20,1945 to 11 September, 1945- Engaged in various exercises and repairs to ship and equipment. Navy Yard availabilities, tender availabilities, and training periods were interspersed during and between the above indicated periods. --------------------------------0--------------------------------------- The Eberle is a unit of the Livermore class of 1938-41. The destroyer is 348 feet four inches in length overall, 36 feet beam, has standard displacement of 1630 tons and has rated speed of 37 knots. Main battery consists of four 5"/38 caliber guns, five 21" torpedo tubes. Wartime complement is more than 250 officers and men.
