National Defense Service Medal

The National Defense Service Medal has been widely awarded to every member of the Armed Forces during three specified periods. Most recently it was awarded to both active duty as well as all active reserve (ie. drill status) reservists for the period of August 2nd, 1990 through November 30th, 1995. The above link documents this period.

Armed Forces Reserve Medal

Originally awarded for 10 years service in the reserve components it is now also awarded, with an "M" device to reservisist mobilized for overseas duty (ie. Operation Desert Storm). Originally a bronze hour glass device was awarded for each additional 10 years of service (ie. 20 years = 1 hourglass, 30 years = 2 hourglasses). Today the first ten years of service is represented by a bronze hourglass, 20 years by a silver one and 30 years by a gold one.
