State of Connecticut Contract Rifle Muskets

It is generally accepted that the state of Connecticut did not surchage the rifle muskets supplied by E. Whitney. However it is very possible that Whitney was not the only supplier of rifle muskets to Connecticut. Below is a photo of a Connecticut surcharged stock from the Springfield Archives. It is a regulation model 1861 rifle musket made in 1863 by William Mason surcharged on the left side of the stock with the Arms Inspectors carftouche. There may be others so marked but they have not yet been discovered.
