In 1863-64 New Jersey
contracted for 10,000 rifle-muskets of Model 1861 pattern. Three firms supplied the arms, but only one was a contactor.
These arms were surcharged with N.J.
on the left facet of the barrel and N.J. or NJ in an oval on the wood opposite the lockplate and
did not have the usual Federal inspectors marks. In all other respects they were identical to the regulation rifle muskets since they
were manufactured by government contractors but not subject to federal inspection just New Jersey inspection.
