NORWICH Contract Rifle Muskets

NORWICH ARMS CO. of Norwich Conn., contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture regulation rifle muskets.
All rifle muskets delivered were of the model 1861 type with the lockplates stamped with a spread eagle foward of the hammer and
U.S. over NORWICH beneath the bolster in two lines. The date was stamped behing the hammer. Some examples of
NORWICH stamped locks are found with MOWRY cartouches opposite the lock, and are believed to have be purchased
by Mowry to complete his contracts. Norwich Arms was expressely formed to supply arms during the Civil War & went out of business shortly thereafter.
