Blunt Contract Rifle Muskets

.
Orison Blunt of New York City, N.Y., contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture "Enfield-pattern" rifle muskets in 1861. Only 500 were completed and delivered in May 1862 when the government cancelled the contract because the arms were not properly proofed. The locplates were usually unmarked however very few were marked with 1861 or 1862 / Union forward of the hammer, and a shield behind the hammer the barrel was stamped one inch from the breech on the upper left side with an unknown proof mark of DP over B within an oval it seems as if these muskets were assembled from Eurpoean & American made parts.
