In 1855 Remington Arms Company received a contract to modernize Model 1816 muskets. It consisted of replacing totally sthe flintlock mechanizm and the conversion of the breech area to a percussion
ignition system based on the Maynard Tape Priming system. The lockplates were marked vertically on their rounded tail "REMINGTON'S over ILION, N.Y. over (date) over U.S."
The hammer is similar to the model 1855 but larger proportions. The breechpieces are 1 inch long not including the tangand are marked on top of the tangwith the date. All the alterations done at Frankord Arsenal
and were rifled with 3 broad equal width lands & grooves. Rear sights identical to those used on Model 1822 rifled musktes were added to to the majority of the
altered muskets but quite a number were left without rear sights.
In 1858 the State Of New Jersey with the agreement of the Chief of Ordnance sent 2000 Model 1822 contract muskets to Frankford for alteration with
Remington breechpieces & lockplates. Most were left unsighted but a few were suppiled with sights. These pieces had "N.J." stamped into the left side
of the barrel near the breech.
