E. Remington Contract Rifle Muskets

E. Remington & Sons of Ilion, NY., contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture regulation Model 1861
rifle muskets. The majority rifle muskets delivered were of the Model 1861, however specimens of Remington Model 1863 Type I rifle muskets
dated 1865 are encountered. Lockplates are marked in front of the hammer, with EAGLE over U.S. in two lines and REMINGTON'S
over ILION, N.Y.in two lines, under the bolster and were dated behind the hammer, 1864. Remington also delivered 12,500 Model 1863 .58
cal. Percussion Rifles as well as many thousands of their percussion revolvers.
