E. Whitney Arms Co. of New Haven, Conn. contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture regulation Model 1861
rifle muskets. All rifle muskets delivered were of the Model 1861 type with parts interchangeable. These arms were
marked on the lockplates in front of the hammer, with EAGLE over U.S. in two lines and WHITNEYVILLE.
in a single line, under the bolster and were dated behind the hammer, 1864 stamped vertically. Whitney also supplied rifle muskets
under contract to the State of Connecticut, as well as 10,000 .69 cal. Plymouth Rifles to the U.S. Navy and many thousands of .36 cal
