The other 12th Squadron, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater as the 12th Combat Cargo Squadron, attached to the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, was active in supporting the construction of the Burma and Lido Roads, flew the "Hump," and supported American and British efforts in the CBI. Both Groups also contained 10th and 11th sister Squadrons.
To shorten a rather long and involved story of paper squadrons, de-activations, re-activations and eventual combinations of groups and squadrons after the end of WWII, one can safely say that the Rhine-Main based 12th Troop Carrier Squadron, 60th Troop Carrier Wing referred to in this website, were born as a result of the Berlin Airlift, in which the 60th Troop Carrier Wing combined elements of both the CBI and ETO 12th Squadrons along with the 10th and llth Squadrons.
The 10th and 11th Squadrons were based at Rhine-Main Air Base, Germany, and the 12th was based at Wiesbaden for a short time before joining her sister Squadrons with the 60th at Rhine-Main. Originally equipped with both C-47s and C-46s, the 12th came to the Airlift flying C-54s, and were later equipped with the Fairchild C-82 toward the end of the Berlin crises in 1949. Transition to the new Fairchild C-119 came in 1951.
