Subject: Re: POW/MIA Recognition Day 98

Dear Mr. Surles:

Thank you for writing to Alaska Governor Tony Knowles. Please be advised Governor Knowles issued the following proclamation on September 9, 1998, and it would sure be terrific if you could share with us where you got your misinformation so we may correct the author or organization:

"The search for unaccounted for and missing soldiers from our nation's wars continues. Their unknown fate causes considerable uncertainty for their families, friends, and fellow veterans.

At least two Alaska citizens are among those whose whereabouts are unknown.

"National POW/MIA Recognition Week" is September 14-20, 1998.

President Bill Clinton has proclaimed September 18, 1998, as "National POW/MIA Recognition Day." On this day, in ceremonies across the country, Americans will join to honor the thousands of soldiers still missing while in the service of our nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tony Knowles, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 18, 1998, as:

POW/MIA Recognition Day

in Alaska, and ask all Alaska residents to join in recognizing and honoring our missing soldiers. They shall not be forgotten."

DATED: September 9, 1998

Tony Knowles
Governor of Alaska

Sincerely,
Kari Spencer
Secretary to Governor Tony Knowles
