Wellington Anthony Hammond was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 2, 1903. His parents were Wellington Waters Hammond and Cecelia Agusta Saup Hammond. He attended McKinley High School, St. Louis, Missouri and Marion Institute, Marion, AL before entering the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland July 3, 1923.
2 June 1927 He graduated fron the Naval Academy and was commissioned Ensign.

30 April 1942 USS Indiana commissioning crew. At Commissioning was assigned Duty as Assistant Gunnery and Antiaircraft Officer.

25 April 1945 Reported to Chief Naval Operations for duty.

12 October 1945 Administrative aide to Admiral Horne, Washington, DC. (Logistics).
June 1946 On leave and Hospital to November 1946.
14 December 1946 Command of the USS Skagit (AKA 105) moored in San Diego Harbor.
Early February 1947 Received order for the USS Skagit to proceed to Oakland, CA and then to Stockton, CA to load food supplies for the Okinawians. Mission to the Orient was to evacuate the Marines from the Tientsin Area of China.
23 February 1947 Set sail from Stockton, CA with dependent wives and children of service personnel aboard for Buckner Bay, Okinawa.
03 July 1947 Returned to San Diego, CA - Mission completed.
08 July-17 Nov 1947 Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA.
04 Dec 1947 Requested to be placed on retired List.
17 November 1947 to 01 March 1948 Served on General Court Martial Board, 11th Naval District.
01 March 1948 Retired with rank of Rear Admiral.
January 1998 Rear Admiral Wellington A. Hammond lives in San Marcus, California and is active in his Church, the Knights of Columbus, and is President of the Annapolis Class of 1927.
He attended the USS Indiana Reunion Association Reunions at Mobile, AL in 1996 and Washington, DC. 1997.
05 November 2000 Rear Admiral Wellington Anthony Hammond passed away at San Marcos, CA at the age of 97
