SNAILS

  • In hot weather, a snail hides in its shell and seals the opening with a plug of slime.
  • As a snail grows, the shell grows round and round.
  • A snail in danger pulls its feelers in and hides its body in its shell.
  • The giant African snail is a monster muncher. It measures around 23cm (9 in) long.
  • Most land snails and freshwater snails are herbivores.
  • The euglandina is a meat-eater which uses its long, sharp teeth to tear up other snails. It moves quickly when a meal is nearby and stretches out to grasp its victim.
  • Most land snails lay eggs like little white pearls in the ground, or under rotting leaves, stones or logs. When the babies hatch out, they already have a tiny curly shell.
