The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, was created in the 19th century by the men of the West Riding region of Yorkshire. To produce a dog so small very selective breeding was done. Some Yorkies weigh about 2.5 pounds or 1kg. The original name of the Yorkie was the Broken Haired Scotch Terrier, but was then replaced by the one we know it by today.
Breed Standard:
Size: 9 inches (23cm)
Weight: 7 pounds (3.5kg or less)
Appearance: A compact, and well proportioned dog. The head is small
and flat, and not overly prominent. The back is short and level. Coat:
Straight glossy black and tan hair that is parted at the nose, and follows
that line to the docked tail. The coat is silky, and can become matted
easily if not brushed often.
Grooming:
This dog does require a fair amount of brushing, and should have it
done twice weekly at the very least. In it's full coat it requires little
scissoring. Most owners prefer to keep the long hair shorter, and then
the Yorkies look more puppy like. In this altered cut the coat is easier
to care for, but still requires a good deal of weekly upkeep.
In Conclusion:
The Yorkie is an intellegent, and adorable little dog. They are an
active breed. The are confident, and outgoing, and make great alarm dogs,
letting you know when anyone comes close, or passes by your home. The grooming
aspect is one that may keep many potiential owners away, due to it's extensive
commitment.
