Set in Craiglockart Military Hospital, Edinburgh, 1917, as World War I rages in the trenches of France, Regeneration is the story of four men. Dr William Rivers (Jonathan Pryce) hovers on the edge of a nervous breakdown as a result of his close involvement with his shattered patients, attempting to "cure" the incurable. The eminent poet Siegfried Sassoon (James Wilby), a brilliant and heroic soldier who is not mentally disturbed but finds himself at Craiglockart after the publication of an outspoken an illegal pamphlet proclaiming his opposition to the war. Wilfred Owen (Stuart Bunce), whose lack of confidence in his work is transformed by his relationship with Sassoon, whose support and inspiration enabled Owen to write what is now regarded as the finest poetry to emerge form the First World War; including Anthem For Doomed Youth. Billy Prior (Jonny Lee Miller), an officer from a humble background, raised through the ranks, who is rendered mute by the horror he has endured.
