Gabriela SABATINI |
|
I believe Sabatini is the all time most popular player in the world. Although she retired in 1996, Sabatini still fills a commercial role. She has a doll; a rose and two perfumes named after her and has never held the top ranking. Sabatini can play exciting tennis and has the best passing shots of the game.

Gabriela Sabatini can play with heavy topspin on both the forehand and backhand. She has a great defensive game with lots of variety. She can slice the backhand and power her shots as well. Gaby plays her best when she is attacking as she has a natural instinct at the net. She won the '90 US Open by attacking well. Her major floor in her game is her serve as she often can lose total confidence in it. She has hit bounces for second serves, meaning she drops her shoulders as she serves the ball and it lands before the net. Her first serve can be a weapon but her confidence in both first and second serve determines that.
1996Sabatini falls in the round of 16 to Chanda Rubin at the Australian Open. She again loses to Rubin at Lipton and from April to August she is out with injury, missing the French and Wimbledon. Seles beats her in the Canadian Open as well as the Olympics easily. Sabatini loses to Asa Carlsson 7-5 3-6 6-2 in the third round of the US Open during in which they play one of best points in history. With some ordinary performances to finish the year ranked 57, Sabatini announces her retirement at the age of 26.
Sabatini had a great start to the year winning Sydney beating Davenport and Fernandez in straight sets. Werdel Witmeyer upsets Sabatini 6-4 6-4 in the opening round of the Australian Open. Three times during the year, Sabatini failed to put matches away after holding match points. In the Semis of Lipton Sabatini led Date 6-1 5-1 and had a total of 5 match points. Date suffering shoulder problems (requiring acupuncture) made a brilliant comeback to win 1-6 7-6 7-6. Sabatini was embarrassed only winning two games in total against Seles and Graf, in two separate matches (Canadian and French Opens) suggesting Sabatini was not playing to standard. She played her way to the Quarter Finals of the French and Wimbledon. Against Martinez on grass Sabatini could easily have thrashed her, only she let her opponent dictate play. Sabatini played below her best to trail 7-5 5-1 and was unlucky, when she came back to force a tiebreak going down 7-5 7-6. At the US Open, Sabatini snuck through the draw beating Hingis and Fernandez comfortably, before losing an entertaining 6-4 7-6 (7-3) match to Graf. Sabatini Finished the year ranked 10.
In 1994, Sabatini made the Semis of Sydney and the Australian Open (for the third consecutive year) falling to Fernandez and Sanchez Vicario. Pierce and Novotna were both favoured to win, but Sabatini defeated both in straight sets. Sabatini fell in the opening round at the French Open and the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Sabatini made the Semi Final at the US Open losing to Sanchez Vicario for the third time of the year, 6-1 7-6 (8-6). At the End of year championships, Sabatini won her first title since May 92 thrashing Davenport 6-3 6-2 6-4.
In the Semi finals, Sabatini fell to Capriati in Sydney and to Seles at the Australian Open to start the year. Her clay court form was good, reaching the final of three consecutive tournaments. The French Open was where Sabatini blew 5 match points and 6-1 5-1 lead to Fernandez. She lost her Quarter final matches to Novotna and Graf at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Sabatini beat Fernandez 6-2 6-3 in the Semi Finals of Sydney to win the title. Whilst Fernandez beat Sabatini in the Semi Finals of the Australian Open. She also won the Tokyo Indoor and Italian. Sabatini led 4-2 in the 3rd set against Seles in the Semi Finals of the French Open. She reached the semi finals of Wimbledon and the Quarter finals of the US open. She finished the year ranked 3.
1991
Sabatini played well at Wimbledon to reach the final. Against Graf, she served for the match twice however Sabatini lost 6-4 3-6 8-6. Sabatini lost in the Quarter finals of the Australian Open to Sanchez Vicario. Capriati upset Sabatini at the US Open. She finished the year ranked 3.
1990
In 1990 Sabatini won her first slam at the US Open beating Graf 6-2 7-6 in the final and Fernandez in the Semi Final. She played with flair, attacking when ever she could.
