Steffi

GRAF

Steffi has been plagued with injury as she has won many titles with back, knee and foot problems. The past 4 years she has had one injury or another. She had to have knee surgery in '97 June which put her out for the rest of the year.

Peter Graf is the controversial father of Steffi. She has had to deal with Peter going to prison for tax evasions for 4 years. Steffi herself, had to fend questions about such tax evasions. She is still able to play her game on court and win big tournaments, because she is a champion.

Graf is the most excellent player in the world. Graf has held the top ranking the longest ever, and has won as many titles and slams as any of the other top players. Graf was able to dominate the other players for so long. Graf and Seles played great in 1992 and they had great depth and competition. Graf as won every slam at least 4 times, won the Golden Grand Slam and 104 titles all up. The rivalry between Graf and Seles was interesting, because Graf was starting to play in top form when Seles was stabbed in 1993. Graf has dominated the tour since then until her knee injury has put her out.The 2 never really played each other in top form

Steffi has the best Forehand in the world. Graf's late preparation on her swing is perfect for her timing. Graf has made an art of running around her backhand to hit forehand winners. The serve and return of Graf is a major part of her game, as it sets up her forehand to win the point. The slice backhand of Graf is used routinely as the ball stays very low. Her volleys are solid which makes her almost unbeatable on grass. Players such as Spirlea, Davenport, Seles, Pierce, Lucic, Williams can now hit their forehand as hard but Graf is more athletic and can exploit their movement.

 1998

Graf missed the Australian Open due to a knee injury from which she has been out of the tour since June last year. She reached the quarter finals in Hanover losing to Appelmans. At Indian Wells she thrashed Sugiyama and Zvereva to make the semi finals. Davenport led 6-4 4-6 4-2 before a hamstring injury forced her to stop the match. Graf returned at Birmingham and was undefeated until Kournikova downed her in 3 sets at Eastbourne. She fell to Zvereva, a player she had beaten 17 times without loss, at Wimbledon. In Calafornia she had got revenge on Zvereva 6-1 6-3 and beat Fernandez 6-4 6-0 to reach the semi finals where she pushed Davenport to 3 sets. She beat Davenport and Novotna in straight sets to win the event in New Haven. She beat Lucic 6-1 6-1 at the US Open but lost to Scnyder in the round of 16.

1997

Graf lost to Coetzer in the heat of Australian Open, in the round of 16. She made the final in Tokyo but had to pull out of the final against Hingis. It was disappointing that the she could not beat Hingis as she is clearly a better player. She had an Athroscope surgery on her knee. She missed three months of competition before she played the German Open, in a rusty performance she lost to Coetzer. Next week she got revenge on Coetzer and beat 15 year old Lucic to win Strasburg. The following week Graf beat Spirlea 6-7 6-2 6-2 but lost to Coetzer for the third time of the year at the French Open. She had full surgery on her knee and missed the rest of the year. She only played five tournaments for the year in which her ranking fell to a low of 25.

1996

Graf missed the Australian Open for the second year in a row. She does win Indian Wells and the Lipton with victories over Davenport (twice), Martinez, Fernandez 6-1 6-0, Rubin 6-1 6-3. She wins the German Open beating Habsudova in the final. At the French Open, Graf thrashed Majoli and Martinez in identical score lines 6-3 6-1. Sanchez Vicario served for the title in the 3rd set at 5-4 and 7-6 before Graf wins an emotional thriller 6-3 6-7 10-8. Both players were in tears, as Graf thanked the public in French for the support they had given her for her personal problems. Graf's 2-year knee injury began at Eastbourne where she had to pull out. She gets revenge on Date and Hingis at Wimbledon, as they had beaten a rusty Graf earlier in the year. Graf crushes Novotna 6-3 6-2 and Sanchez Vicario to win her record 7th Wimbledon. Graf struggled with injury as she played only one tournament before the US Open. Graf defeats Kournikova, Hingis, Seles to win the US Open. Graf wins at New York beating in form player such as Davenport, Novotna and Hingis. She finishes the year with 7 titles and top ranking.

1995

Graf wins her first 6 tournaments of the year including a 6-2 6-2 wiping of the recent Australian Open champion, Pierce . Her back injury forces her out of the Australian Open and misses most of the clay court season, however she wins the French Open with no real preparation. As the underdog, she beats Martinez and Sanchez Vicario to get her top ranking back. Her Wimbledon campaign was going strong after beating Hingis, Coetzer and Fernandez in straight sets. Novotna plays a great match to lead a set and a break, until Graf turned it around to win 5-7 6-4 6-2. Sanchez Vicario came very close to upsetting Graf, in which the 11th game at 5-5 in the 3rd set went for 20 minutes. Graf won the game to take the match 4-6 6-1 7-5. She plays her toughest rival Seles at the US Open, the Co-No 1 who has made her come back. Graf played strongly in the 3rd set to claim the title 7-6(8-6) 0-6 6-3. She won in the in New York to win her win her eighth title of the year. Graf lost only twice for the year to South Africans, Coetzer and de Stuart, to be ranked No 1 by years end.

1994

Graf starts the year by winning the Australian Open without dropping set, which includes a 6-0 6-2 thrashing of Sanchez Vicario. She wins 6 tournaments in a row before she falls in Hamburg 4-6 7-6 7-6 to Sanchez Vicario. At the French Open, she was defeated by Pierce in the Semi finals. At Wimbledon, McNeil causes the biggest upset in beating Graf 7-5 7-6 in the first round. Graf thrashes Sanchez Vicario 6-2 6-1 in the final San Diego. She avenged the loss to Pierce, beating her at the Canadian Open in straight sets. This is where her back problems began and where she loses 7-5 1-6 7-6 in final to Sanchez Vicario. At the US Open, she defeats Coetzer and Novotna to reach the final where she plays Sanchez Vicario losing 1-6 7-6 6-4. Graf falls to Pierce in New York, but has won 7 tournaments to finish the year ranked 1, even though many people thought it was Sanchez Vicario's year to be ranked on top. Graf inilated Sanchez Vicario three times, and in the 3 Sanchez Vicario victories Graf won 6 more games so the rankings were correct.

1993

In 1993, Seles won her third Australian Open defeating Graf 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the final. Seles was stabbed during a tennis match against Maggie Maleeva late Thursday afternoon, April 30. Gunther Parche, Seles's would be killer, stabbed her because he wanted his compatriot and idol Steffi Graf to become No 1 again. Parche got his wish, as Graf becomes the No 1 after the French Open, 5 weeks later. Graf won the French and US Opens as well as Wimbledon with the loss of only 4 sets. Fernandez had a break in the 3rd set in the Paris final before Graf came back to win 4-6 6-2 6-4. Novotna was playing the match of her life in the Wimbledon final and lead 4-1 40-30 in the 3rd set. Novotna choked, with Graf winning 5 games in row to take the title, her fifth in total. Graf easily beat Sukova in the US Open final. She had a terrific year in which she won 10 tournaments, out of 14 finals and 15 semi final in 15 tournaments she played, finishing the year on top playing in absolute great form. However, without Graf's toughest rival in Seles the year was tainted.

1992

In 1992, Graf misses the Australian Open due to German measles. She defeats Sanchez Vicario at the French Open. Graf was on the verge of victory in the final before Seles rallied to win 6-2 3-6 10-8. Never before had Graf and Seles played in perfect form as the match was the best of the decade in the quality of tennis as well as the closeness. Graf got revenge when she thrashed Seles 6-2 6-1 in the Wimbledon final. She also took out Sabatini in straight sets. At the US Open, Graf fell to Sanchez Vicario 7-6 6-3. Graf again claimed 10 tournament victories and finished the year ranked 2, behind Seles, as she did in '91.

1991

Novotna beat Graf 5-7 6-4 8-6 in at the Australian Open. Graf lost to Sanchez Vicario at the French Open, in a very poor effort as she was distracted by personal problems. Graf wins her only slam of the year at Wimbledon beating Fernandez before winning a classic against Sabatini in her opponent served for the title twice. At the US Open, she lost to Navratilova in the Semi finals. She wins 10 tournaments and finishes the year on ranked second best.

1990

In 1990, Graf won her third Australian Open defeating Sukova and Fernandez. Seles defeated Graf 6-4 6-3 in the German Open final in Berlin. The win was the first over Graf, who at that stage was invincible. The 4th title on clay gave her confidence for the French Open. Seles as the 2nd seed, beat Graf again 7-6(8-6) 6-4 to become the youngest winner of the French ever. At Wimbledon she lost a terrific match to Garrison 3-6 6-3 6-4 and at the US Open she reached the final, before Sabatini beat her. She is dethroned her top ranking from Seles, finishing a respectable ranking of 2.

1989

Graf had another top year in which she wins the Australian Open where she beat Sukova in the final. At Wimbledon she played Navratilova in their third straight final and Graf won 6-2 6-7 6-1. She claims her second US Open. The year was arguably better than '88 because she only lost twice, on clay to Sabatini and Sanchez Vicario. The latter was more disappointing as it came in the French Open final. The 7-6 3-6 7-5 loss cost her The Grand Slam. She wins 14 tournaments to finish the year on top.

1988

Graf wins the Golden Grand slam, which is the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open all in one year. Graf also won the Olympic Gold Medal, hence the name Golden. She is the only player to do so. Graf has only 3 losses for the year.

1987

Graf wins her first slam at the French Open beating Navratilova 6-4 4-6 8-6, after trailing 3-5 in the 3rd set. Navratilova beats Graf in the Wimbledon and US Open finals. She wins ten tournaments to finish the year ranked first.
