The Rise or Fall of Heaven is the Responsibility of Everyone

1. The Road to Home is Long and Winding

This author graduated from the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1983 and was awarded the Overseas Graduate Scholarship of the Education Ministry of China. During my graduate studies in Sweden between 1984 and 1987, I gave up the free opportunity provided in the scholarship to visit families in China due to busy work. After obtaining the Licentiate of Technology Degree in 1987, I went back to the Central South University of Technology to work as a university teacher. I published a part of my thesis work in Chinese on the Chinese Journal of Rock Mechanics and Engineering. I was later promoted to the lecturer position. In October of 1989, I was fortunate to go abroad again on a graduate fellowship from Queen's University of Canada. I obtained the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in 1993 and was awarded the Graduate Thesis Award of the Canadian Tunnelling Association. I later published a number of high quality papers in International Journals. After graduation in 1993, I went to Xian of China to attend an international conference and took the opportunity to explore work opportunities, visit professors, classmates, friends and relatives in China. Job prospect was as bleak as ever before at that time. Between 1993 and 2003 in Canada and the United States, I had the experience of postdoctoral research, unemployment, working in a mining software company, senior engineer in mining (part-time at XY RocCAD Inc.), unemployment, working at engineering software giant Autodesk Inc., starting up Pulsehead Corp., house husband, etc.. In the past 20 years, my monthly salary varied from zero to $6000 US dollars, and self-disposable daily time varied from 24 to 4 hours. Living space varied from single room to 2 bedroom apartments. In general, my standard of living did not vary much, but the things I did were different from time to time. In order to seek employment in the United States, I obtained Canadian citizenship in 1987. Between 1987-2000, I developed a first class engineering design software th at was adopted by two Canadian companies. Between 2000-2003, I developed another first class general-purpose multimedia database software. Unfortunately, the white people would not allow immigrants from mainland China to become prosperous entrepreneurs in high technology. They expected Chinese to be technical workers.

I went to seek political and economic asylum in the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China located at 1450 Laguna Street in San Francisco on Monday, January 13, 2003 at about 3:30-4:00 PM. I wanted to regain my Chinese citizenship. By the invitation of the deputy Consul General, the San Francisco police went inside the Chinese consulate and took me to jail. I was charged with tress passing (occupation of premise without owner's consent), but released in innocence the next day afternoon by the pre-trial judge. In order to prevent me from going back to the Chinese Consulate, the jail sheriff delayed my going home by holding back all my money until 4:00 PM, Tuesday, January 14.

I went north from California to British Columbia of Canada to seek work opportunities. A set of valuable camera was stolen. Because it was insured, I did not worry much. However, I did not obtain any compensation due to cost calculations and the $500 deductable. In March of 2003, I went personally to see the claims manager of the Amica Insurance Company in Petaluma of California. I went for the dural purpose of settling down my claim and demonstrate the data and document management software that I developed. The manager happily agreed to give me USD$965. I used USD$798 of it to buy a plane ticket from the Southern China Airlines from Los Angeles to GuangZhou at a higher than ordinary cost. I also tried hard to find three 3 ft tall redwood seedlings to bring them to MaiYuan to plant (see following photograph). On the last day of my departure, my wife and children came back from a vacation trip in China to California. Because of packing luggage and computer files, I nearly worked overnight. I also wanted to bring to China my used Sony air conditioning machine, but between the tree seedlings and the machine, I chose the trees. This was because trees not only shield againt sunshine and wind, keep moisture; but also transform solar energy to wood; they also conserve water, reinforce ground, produce soil, etc. (see photograph). Planting and caring for trees can bring forth unlimited joy. It was too late to follow my original plan to take a train to Los Angles for sightseeing. Instead, I had to spend an extra of more than USA$100 to take a domestic flight to Los Angeles.

Spring water at a location half way up the YueLu Mountain.

In the morning of April 23, 2003, I put the three redwood seedlings, with the pots included, into a large white plastic shopping bag, and took a bus to the Oakland airport. The airport is located on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and it was humid and warm. The plastic bag became soft and the handle began to rupture. Since I could not find any bag, I simply took a large black garbage bag from a garbage bin, and wrapped the trees inside. The trees were passed through the X-ray machine and I carried them inside the waiting hall. A black attendant suggested me to find a cardboard box as a container. I did find a small cardboard box to use as a base for the three pots. Then it was possible to put it on the airport stroller. At 15:09, the South West airlines flight took off at Oakland airport. After arriving in the Los Angeles airport, the trees had to pass through the X-ray machine once more to get on the airplane to China.

The Boeing 777 plane took off on 2003-04-23 at the time 23:59 and arrived in GuangZhou on 2003-04-23 at the time 06:20. The total flight time was 15 hours and 21 minutes. Due to the new epidemic disease in China as reported in the mass media, most seats on the large airplane are empty. I thought the plane were to fly straight across the Pacific Ocean, but, it went on a arch path. It flew north along the east coast of the Pacific, and overlooked British Columbia of Canada and Alaska of the United States. It then turned south to fly over the sea to the east of Russia, Japan and eastern China. It finally touched down in GuangZhou. The airplane experienced the relativity of time in the earth's atmosphere, that is, the entire 15 hours of flight was in the night sky. The lights in the cities of north America and Japan are brighter than the stars in the sky. The plane was racing contrary to the rotation of the earth, but it fell short in speed. If the speed were to be the same, then the biological clock on the plane would stop. Unfortunately, at the BaiYun airport, the three redwood trees were confiscated by the Customs with the reason that the trees had not gone through the the required checks. But, the Customs has the responsibility to conduct such checks. I saw many types of trees in San Rafael of California that came from China and other continents. I think that it is an act of "Close the Doors to Shut Oneself In" for the Customs to confiscate the trees.

On my way back, I spent one day in the hotel of the Provincial Education Commission of GuangZhou. I gave a seminar at the Geotechnical Institute of the Guangdong University of Technology. Influenced by the ocean on the south and eastside, the sky in GuangZhou was always misty. The weather at the end of April was already hot. The dust and smoke of the vehicles were kept in the living space of the city. Sky scrapers of tens of storeys high stood everywhere and they looked dirty. I remembered that during my last trip to GuangZhou in 1988, I walked in the clean business streets of low buildings. I took a train back to Changsha on April 26 and found that the city was like GuangZhou. Walking in the streets at Eastern Pond of Changsha was like working in an open pit mine. I saw steel windows and doors on new buildings and felt it was a waste of precious natural resources. I learn the following ancient Chinese poem in elementary school "Tending the rice field till the middle of the day with drops of sweat under the feet. Do they know that every grain of rice in the bowl comes from hardship? ". Unfortunately, wastes in food and smoking are alarming today. The good side is that the student canteens in the South Central University are better than before. Hills on the periphery of the YueLu mountain are all green with trees. In a recent hiking of the YueLu mountain, I found that the traffic road extended across the ridge of the park. Vehicles can come in from Hunan University and exit at RongWanZhen. Plastic garbage lies on small hiking trails. Traffic dust, exhaust, garbage as well as buildings that edged into the valleys of the park have imposed a threat on the ecosystem of the small YueLu Park. At 18:00 PM on June 19 of 2003, I took the opprtunity to hike the YueLu mountain on the small road from a small house to the Birds' Park to pick up and bring home two small bags of plastic garbage. On July 5 at 18:45, I went for the second time to pick up a large black bag of plastic garbage on the same road from the Birds' Park to above the Ding WenJiang tomb. I reside in the building No. 14 of Victory village. Behind it is a construction site. Due to the site's temporary drainage ditch, the rain ditch of the building was blocked by sand deposit. As a result, dirty black water accumulated in the entire ditch. Despite the bad smell and dirt, I cleaned out the entire ditch on October 11, 2003.

My work and life need a computer and the internet. The South Central University is relatively safe, tidy and clean, but there is no internet bar. There is a new crowded small commercial village behind the university. The village has a few internet bars and small restaurants. Due to a concentration of people and a lack of planning, it looked untidy. The photograph below shows a garbage dump beside the road. Students had to cross the wall of the university to go there. In Changsha, computers in internet bars have no floppy drives, and it is not possible to either download or upload files. Furthermore, it is impossible to go to some websites hosted in foreign countries. Using commas as dialing stops and after a few trials, I was abled to use the 200 telephone card to dial up to the internet. When I was in California, USA, I used a telephone line to dial up to the internet, and it was faster than the ADSL broadband lines in the university. Telephone dialup was inexpensive and convenient. I was able to go to any Chinese website. But, in China, I can not go to some websites hosted in the United States. According the the ancient Chinese wisdom "Knowing You and Me, Hundred Percent Victory", such internet is not to the advantage of China.

2¡£Xiang plays the Sword to Intimidate Pei

After the June 4 th event of 1989, the United States government worked with Western European governments to secretly undermine the Soviet government structure, and facilitate the open westernization of the soviet union. Afterwards, former soviet leader and the Nobel Peace Price winner Michael Gorbachev lost his power and could no longer command listeners. The superpower Soviet Union of Socialist Republics disintegrated quickly. Russia went into economic difficulty due to internal struggles. The United States became the only world superpower

Due to increased trade between China and the United States, Europe felt the pressure of worldwide economic competition. European countries recently formed the European Union and unified their currencies. The white men's cultures of the United States, Europe and Russia have the same origin, that is, expansion at the expense of Nature. Russia expanded from Europe to Asia and Alaska of America. Europe expanded to Africa, to America across the relatively narrow Atlantic Ocean, and to Oceania. Today, the eastern culture as represented by China and the western culture as represented by the United States of America are facing each other across the water of the vast deep blue Pacific Ocean.

China is a country in which racial relation is not talked about often, but, in the United States and Canada, it is talked about nearly everyday. Many people think that the white people believe in racial equality, but, they believe in that "blood is thicker than water". Many people think that North America is a great new territory that is rich in natural resources, but its rate of consuming and wasting their resources is astonishing. Today, it is more or less like China. In fact, the United States has almost stopped developing it own resources to preserve the natural environment, but, they have not decreased the speed of consumption. The United States is playing the game of trading its high technology for natural resources with other countries. They think that Asian countries are weak, poor, and backward in technology; and that they are the western territories waiting for expansion. The Korean War and the recent history of the Chinese struggle againt imperialism and feudalism have demostrated that the gain will not make up for the loss to invade the east part of the earth.

Research by the author has shown that the western civilization originated from the migration, spread and expansion of the eastern civilization. People all over the world must realize that the planet Earth has no room for expansion.

3¡£The Western Countries led by the United States

The western countries led by the United States have their cultural roots in the Christian bible. They use high consumption and expansion as incentives for development. At each presidential inauguration, the president must make a pledge with a hand on the bible. The following sentence is on any US currency: "In God We Trust". The God in the bible represent Love, Justice, Wisdom and Power. Although bible teachers emphasize peace, friendship and mutual assistance between neighbors, the military, economic, and cultural branches of the western governments are good at simulating the invisible power of God. They may appear to be independent of each other, but, they are in fact invisibly united against foreigners. They have kept on invading small countries to achieve the dural goal of power accumulation and intimidation.

Nevertheless, the United States is a paper tiger that is blown up by the global mass media. It is great only on paper or US currency. Whether it is on the basis of natural or human resources, the United States has no credibility to become the global dictator. The original forest of the United States was destroyed a long time ago in the colonial wars. Mineral and water resources have been depleted to a great degree in the industrialization and wars of invasion. The bulk use of nuclear and petroleum power sources have imposed potential danger to the air and water resources. The domestic economy of the United States, has been in decline since the year 2000. In fact, any country of the world has no credibility to be the global dictator.

The author has experienced the theater in which the United States played the paper tiger. The ultra-rightists fraction of the United States made up the 911 terrorist attacks. On September 11, 2001, the US government mobilized the global mass media to break the news that terrorists drove commercial air planes to crash into the World Trade Center of New York City and the Pentagon of Washington DC. In the morning of the day, I went to the Surrey Human Resource Office of the Canada Federal Government in British Columbia. My application was delayed and it was eventually not approved. It appeared that the secret agents of Canada and the UNited States was trying to corner me into a terrorist. Residents in New York city told me that the perimeter of the World Trade Center was guarded by the police, and no person personally witnessed the occurrence of the event. The US government has security and background clearance requirements for commercial pilots. Pilots of Asian origin are recognizable in appearance, but they are seldom seen on air planes. It is unlikely that Asian terrorists would drive air planes to crash into the buildings. One of my proposition is that the World Trade Center was built some time ago and that it does not meet the standards for earthquake safety. It needs to be rebuilt. Because the building is tall and large, large scale blasting is required to take it down. The US government made up the event of terrorist attacks to isolate the area in order to blast it down and then rebuild it. The US mass media used computer graphic arts to make up the crashing of air planes on to walls, that is, the 911 event. The US government and business managers used the opportunity to change officers and push aside Asian immigrants. Another proposition is that the US military used pilotless airplanes to crash into the buildings in order to conduct experiments, but it made up the story of terrorist attacks as a pretext to invade other countries.

In the European colonization of America, not only the natives were exterminated or absorbed, but also the original forests were cleared and rivers polluted. Wood was used to build ships, buildings, railways and weapons. Wood as energy source and structural material were used to develop mineral resources that were eventually used to build transportation vehicles, weapons and densely populated cities. Most part of the industry in the west has been to prepare for wars.

Today, North America, Europe and Australia are connected through free trade. Corporations are becoming larger and larger through mergers. Not to speak of global corporations in high technologies, the most traditional mining companies have become global through mergers. Underground mines are physically challenging places in terms of rate of changes, air humidity, dust, darkness, space constraints, and timing. In addition to producing mineral resources in the mines, new technologies such as materials, machinery, energy sources, and communication methods are tested in the mines. Mines are also work places where persons are trained in cooperation and multidisciplinary knowledge and experience. Western countries encourage risk taking and expasionism, and are becoming more competitive than ever. Because China is too big and heavy, and has a very different culture, they have neither in history nor today considered China a nation that can be won over as an ally. Instead, they consider China to be a nation that can be divided and conquered.

Western people are keen on invention. They invented many new products, some of them are good and some are not so good. Some products are rejected in the domestic market, but the business men would still export them to countries around world in order to make more money. Such products include cigarettes, Coca Cola, certain new drugs, cellular phones, handheld digital assistant computer, electronic toys and computer games, etc..

The United States has the highest sense of security. It bought the land of Alaska from the Tsar of Russia, and the Russian can not forget about it. It uses immigrants from all around the world to build up he country, but lacks complete trust in them. On the one hand, the US continues to push the defense perimeter outward, on the other, it strengthens its internal security by training every person to be a soldier. For examples, many citizens have private weapons and they practise them regularly. The police departments of cities conduct regular training for local residents. The national defense system regularly trains part-time reservists. Religious activists regularly go out to persuade residents to go to their meetings.

4¡£The Middle Powers of the World

Under the influence of the United States super power policy, Russia, Easten European and Northern European countries have moved closer to the United States. Other countries in America, China and India have also moved closer to the United States. Central Asian Republics of the former soviet union and other Asian countries mind their own business. United States seemed to have become the center of the globe. Experts estimate that the American and World economy will continue to decline.

5¡£The Special Position of China on the Planet Earth

China is large in area and rich in resources. She has now one sixth of the world's population. The rice agriculture and character based language in China and surrounding countries are special among world civilizations. This rice agriculture and the handicraft industry are in sharp contrast with western prairie agriculture and heavy machinery industry. The former led to happy permanent residence for humans and the conservation of wind, water and air resources, but the latter led to the human migration and expansion and the damage of such resources. Chinese as a visual language is concise, easy to read, uses less natural resource and protects dialects. Western languages are audio or spelling languages that standardized speaking but are longer in writing. China should continue to be the locomotive of not only the eastern but also the global civilization. She should build up her own system of culture, way of thinking, science, technology and economy. She should build up solidarity with third world countries, collaborate with world middle countries, and compete with western countries led by the United States.

The current status of international trade is a challenge to China in the global competitions. Since Americans and Europeans refuse to use Chinese intellectual products but are ardent in selling Hi-Tech products to China, the Chinese intellectual industry will lose the opportunity to develop. Since China export a lot of labor intensive goods, foreign workers will lose the opportunity to work, but the Chinese workers will loose the opportunity to obtain education. China should (i) encourage the establishment of her own global corporations, (ii) assist Chinese to establish production corporations overseas, and (iii) reduce or refuse to use products made by foreign companies.

6¡£China should become one of three World Powers

Literacy and thinking are like the Sun and the planetary stars. In the times of peace, China should stand on the global point of view and take the initiative to promote her best cultures abroad. It will be hard to have other nation accept our culture, but it will not be so hard to help others understand our culture. In addition to her own system of culture, way of thinking, science, technology and economy, China must also buildup her own national defense that includes land, ocean, air and underground systems and relies on every person being a soldier. This will ensure that the western military minority will not be able to expand into Asia.

There are natural resources everywhere on the planet earth, only that they are different at different locations. People exchange, tourism, and trade on an equal basis are effective ways to share resources and help one another.

For the security of the planet earth, there should be three global superpowers. On the one hand, this will encourage necessary competition, on the other, if one superpower becomes ineffective, the other two can still maintain global peace. China will not be intimidated by the paper tiger, on the contrary, she will become a definitive power to prevent one country invading the other.

7¡£Personal Power in the Global Network

Since 1999, I have been persecuted by the ultra-rightist fractions of Canada and the United States. Immediately after the 911 event of the year 2001, I wrote an open letter to the United Nations Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan and asked him to help the world campaign for human rights, good government and natural environment in the United Nations. Email reply from his office indicated that any proposition to the United Nations must be submitted by a member nation. I sent letters and emails to Canada Mission to UN, Canadian Prime Minister, party leaders, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. No reply was received. In the beginning of 2002, I found the YI LING GONG Poem from MaiYuan village, DongAn county of Hunan Province (see Appendix). It combines the best of Confucius, Taoist, Legalist, Buddist, and Marxism teachings, etc.. It stated good personal relations, people and government relations and natural environment. Due to the elicitation of this Poem, I did literature research and authored a few articles such as "Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Good Government and Natural Environment", "Complementary Sino-US Cultures", "Proposal for International Research in Rock Sciences", "On the Martian Origin of the Human Race", "Draft Proposal to Establish the Southern Hunan Economic Hills Park", "Case Studies for the Prevention and Curing of Sickness", "Personal Witnesses of Human Rights Abuses in Canada and the United States". I put these articles on the internet.

From year 2002 to the spring of 2003, I sent postcards and/or wrote letters to Chinese leaders Jiang Zeming, Hu JinTao, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji; HongKong governor Dong Jianhua; Macao governor He Houhua; Chinese Academy of Social Science professor Yu GuangYuan; Chinese Nationality University professor Wang ZhongHan; Chinese Association of the Physically Challenged Deng Pufang; Beijing Science and Technology University professor Wang DingZuo; Hunan Communist Party Secretary and Hunan Daily Editor; Taiwan Central Academy professor Li YuanZhe; US president George W. Bush and secretary of state Colin Powell; presidents of Singapore, South Africa, Mexico, Cuba, Russia, Canada. I sent emails to mission to the United Nations of 132 member nations (including the Republic of Iraq). I also sent emails to news agencies around the world, US politicians such as Washington state governor Garry Locke of Chinese-American origin. I asked them to join the world campaign for human rights, good government and natural environment. No reply was received, but the international affairs prior to the US invasion of the Republic of Iraq indicated that work and articles had a profound effect. Chinese president Jiang Zeming avoided Canada in a state visit to US and Mexico. The United Nations adopted the policy of opposing the US invasion of a small country for the first time in its history. The US president George W. Bush was possibly under the pressure from the military and the ultra-right fraction to invade Iraq. I believe that the universal declaration of human rights, good government and natural environment will be adopted and implemented in the near future. My personal effort so far would be like the first application by China to host the the Olympic Games when she was short by just one vote.

My personal experience has shown that the Chinese wisdom as expressed in "The Rise or Fall of Heaven is the Responsibility of Everyone" is more relevant than ever before. This is because modern tools of transportation, communication, and work have augmented the power of a person in all four dimensions of space and time. If every Chinese takes up leadership and responsibility roles, then it will not be long when China becomes one of the three world superpowers.
