From early 1960s till late 1980s Georgian rugby has been an integral
part of wider Soviet picture. Top Georgian clubs (in fact, regional
selections fed by local student teams) have been participating in
Soviet Champs and Cup, and best players even managed to make USSR
'National' team
Then everything changed drastically. Preempting the collapse of the
Soviet Empire, the Georgians formed their National side and applied for
the IRB membership. This bold venture eventually brought considerable
success with the LELOS currently being the highest-ranked ex-Soviet force
Aia Kutaissi, guided by Douglas Kavtelashvili, earned a distinction
of being the most successful Georgian team of Soviet Era
