There was a Robert Elliott who is said to be the 10th chief of the name in 1476 and it is from this time that the formal history of the clan began". due to the destruction of the castle at Stobs all the family documents were lost.

Ireland: Eliogarty is a phonetic rendering of the Irish Eile ui Fhogartaigh, the nominative case of the surname being O' Fogartaigh. Also Fogerty.
Most common in Counties Tipperary and Dublin. The Sept of O'Fogarty was of sufficient importance to give it's name to a large territory, viz. Eliogarty, the Southern part of Eile or Ely. Eilogarty is now the name of the Barony of Tipperary. The Annuls of Ulster, dated 1072, describe the chief of the Septs as O'Fogarty, King of Ely.
