Recent Research Awards from the Biogeography Specialty Group

Every year the Biogeography Specialty Group (BSG) offers a competition designed to provide partial support to deserving graduate students doing biogeographical research for their master's or doctoral theses. Those students applying to this competition must be (or become) AAG members, and are encouraged to be (or become) BSG members. Additionally, no past winners of this competition are eligible. The criteria used for evaluating the applicants include the scientific merit of the proposed research, the soundness of the proposed methods and analyses, and the appropriateness of the budget items. In addition, the applicants are evaluated in terms of their past experience and their level of need.

The BSG graduate student research grant competition of 1996 attracted 12 high-quality applications from 5 Ph.D. candidates and 7 master's degree students.

The 2 winners were Ricardo Grau (PhD candidate, University of Colorado, advisor: Thomas Veblen) for "Disturbance and tree species diversity along the elevational gradient of a subtropical montane forest," and Ralph J. Campbell (master's student, New Mexico State University, advisor: Michael DeMers) for "A predictive GIS model of cougar habitat for the San Andres mountains." Ricardo was awarded $700 and Ralph $300 to help with their research.

The judges that helped with this task were: Keith Hadley, Kimberly Medley, Scott Mensing, and Kenneth Young.
