Sophrocattleya Big Red is a hybrid of C. guttata x S. coccinea, made by William Kirsch's Woodlawn Nursery in Palolo valley on Oahu (which is now Pat Kawamoto's nursery) many years ago. I had several of these, and all were quite nice, with intense red color, good sized flowers with heavy substance, and compact growth. This is the only survivor that I know of, though I gave a piece of one called 'Kathie' to Ken West and it might still be alive. The other two perished from too much rain before I got them planted out in the forest.
The variegated vine in the background is a gesneriad of some sort.
