Activated sludge is being vacuum filtered through a Buchner funnel. The funnel contains a pre-weighed filter which will retain the suspended solids, while allowing the water and dissolved solids to pass through. The filter plus the captured solids will be dried to constant weight at 103 - 105 oC, then cooled and weighed. Subtracting the original (tare) weight of the filter and dividing the result by the the volume of sample filtered allows the analyst to calculate the concentration of suspended solids in the sludge in milligrams per liter.
