The solvent layer, containing the extracted oil or grease, is being drained from a 2-liter, pear-shaped, separatory funnel through sodium sulfate drying agent into a pre-weighed receiving flask (below bottom of picture). The solvent will be evaporated and collected for reuse, after which the flask will be weighed to determine the amount of oil and grease in the original sample.
In the background is a distillation apparatus used in phenol analysis.
