Part Five of Five
She discovered a small path that was cut into the bluff leading to the beach and followed it. The feeling of being watched came over her again. She noticed a small cave that she had never seen before and ducked inside. A bullet slammed into a rock next to the entrance, missing her by inches. Moonlight shone into the cave and lit the interior with an eerie glow. Tessa looked around and saw that it was only about twelve feet deep. Pressing her back against the wall she could see where the last shot had hit near the entrance. Feeling safe for the moment she leaned her head against a wall and closed her eyes. From the direction of those shots, I doubt if the shooter can get a clear shot. I wonder how Montoya found this assassin? That scope of his must really be something to see in the dark.
A noise from outside brought her fully alert. A lump came to her throat as she reached down to retrieve the main gauche from her boot. Someone is out there. If my heart beats any louder I am sure he will hear it. She saw a shadow pass by the entrance to the cave. She lunged out from behind the intruder, grabbing his neck and pulling him into the cave. She pressed him against the wall with her dagger to his throat.
"Wait! It's me, Carlos!" he cried.
She pulled the dagger away as he gasped for breath. "What the Hell are you doing lurking around in the dark?"
He rubbed his hand over his throat. "I have come to rescue you."
"How are you rescuing me? We are both trapped in here." She waved the dagger at him. His eyes were fixed onto the blade dancing before him and like a snake, his head followed every movement of her hand. "When we get out of here Carlos, you and I are going to have a long talk and I believe you know about what." She lowered the dagger.
"It's all right." He said hastily. "I explained everything to Doctor Helm."
Tessa placed her gloved hand over his mouth. She placed her finger up to her lips. "Be quiet! I hear someone else." Carlos kept quiet as she moved to the mouth of the cave.
Outside the cave, Doctor Helm stopped onto the narrow path to get his bearings. He scratched his head and looked around. He felt a hand clamp over his mouth as he was pulled deeper into the shadows and into a cave as the ping of a bullet struck the cliff above where he had been standing. The Queen released him once inside the cave and spun him around. "Don't tell me. You've come to rescue me, also." She turned to Carlos. "Why didn’t you tell me he was with you?"
Carlos grinned and shrugged his shoulders. She turned back to Helm. "I hope there aren’t any more rescuers. It’s getting crowded in here."
Helm glared back at her. "We tried to warn you but were too late. So, Carlos went one way and I the other following the sounds of the gunshots."
Tessa looked at the entrance to the cave. "That last shot makes three he has fired. His Baker rifle should be getting pretty fouled by now."
"You’re familiar with the workings of the Baker rifle?" Helm asked curiously.
"Thanks to your insistence that I read some English books, I saw an article about it. I tend to pay attention to things that might kill me." She backed up to the opposite wall and faced the two men. "One more shot and it will take him a minute or two to reload. He probably had to hammer the ramrod to seat the ball this time. One more shot and we will have just enough time to make it over the ridge line and out of his killing field."
Helm and Carlos reached a piece of driftwood lying on the cave floor. "Carlos, give me your hat," Helm said. "I have an idea."
Carlos held onto it stubbornly. "Hell, no. You give me the stick."
"What are you boys two doing?" The Queen’s indulgent tone cut through their argument, irritating Helm even more. Why did I bother to come out here in the first place. She’s making it obvious she can take care of herself and doesn’t want either of us around.
"I am going to hold Carlos’ hat on the stick and hold it just outside the cave." he said, biting down his temper.
"Like Hell. It’s my hat. I am going to do it." Carlos insisted.
The men struggled for control of the stick. "I want to be the one to save her, I am honor bound to repay her." Carlos cried.
"I have to save her to make up for my actions." Roberto snapped back.
Tessa was shocked at the antics her would-be saviors. She whistled, and got no response. She called them, and got no response. This will get their attention. She walked up to the two men, placed one hand on each head and their two heads together. The men crumpled to the ground at her feet.
Helm looked up from the ground at her. For a moment, his eyes narrowed in anger and she wondered if she’d gone too far. Then, he relaxed. "I guess I deserved that."
"Yes you did." she said.
He carefully stood up, holding his head, now looking more contrite. "Do you think you'll ever be able to forgive me?"
She placed her hands on her hips and stared at him. Marta was right. She had given herself to this man and she knew that he loved her. No matter how angry she was with him, it would be stupid to let this go any further. He flinched, as if anticipating another blow, as she walked towards him. She took his head in her hands and pulled him to her as they kissed. Helm pulled back and looked into her eyes. "We'll work this out together." he said.
"Yes, Roberto, we will." She looked down at Carlos, who was just now waking up. "But right now, I think Carlos needs a doctor."
Helm got down on his knees and helped Carlos sit up. Carlos moaned, "I should have stayed on the pirate ship where it was safe." Helm pulled a small purple bottle out of his vest pocket. Pulling out the glass stopper, he waved the bottle of smelling salts under Carlos’ nose. Carlos began to thrash around as he woke up. He opened his eyes and looked at Doctor Helm. "I have learned a very important lesson today." he said.
Helm helped him up to his feet, "What would that be?"
"Your head is a Hell of a lot harder than mine." Carlos looked around. "Where is she?"
Helm looked around the cave. "I don't know. She was here a minute ago." They both flinched as another shot rang out. They ran to the entrance and saw that dawn was breaking." Doctor Helm cautiously moved into the open. "That last shot sounded different, more like a musket than a rifle."
Carlos joined Helm. "Maybe it blew up on him."
A shadow passed over them and Helm looked up into the sky. He pointed up. "Get back. It's the Thunderbird."
Carlos turned to look. "Dear God. It's carrying someone away."
The giant condor flapped its great wings as it climbed into the early morning sky. In a few seconds, it was completely gone from view.
"Carlos, could you see who it was?" Helm said anxiously.
"No, I couldn’t make out who it was. You don't think...?" Carlos’ eyes were big.
Doctor Helm tried not to show his concern. Then, Carlos pointed behind Helm. Doctor Helm turned around. Both men gave out a sigh of relief at the sight of the Queen riding away on Chico.
Epilogue
A frustrated Colonel Montoya walked away from the cantina. It had been two days since his prisoners had escaped and his assassin had disappeared. Grisham and his soldiers were unable to find Major Dodd. The twisted and bloody Baker Rifle had been found at the ambush sight, along with several unusually long feathers.
Montoya decided not to press charges for the jailbreak of Doctor Helm, Carlos or Señor Parada. When Montoya saw Doctor Helm, they only nodded to each other. Montoya had encountered a nervous Señor Parada and while neither spoke, the Commandant did notice that the coffee tasted better.
Doctor Helm sat at the cantina drinking his morning tea, and watched Montoya leave. Montoya is worried about Carlos. At least he hasn’t shown any penchant to re-arrest me. I really don't want to recount the assassin’s last night. He rubbed the lump on his head. It's not as if I don't have enough bad memories already.
Montoya entered his office and caught sight of something out of the ordinary on his desk. He walked over and picked up a sword. He recognized his nephew’s sword by the initials C.M. engraved into the hilt. He studied it as he walked over and stood the sword in the corner. You'll be back someday, Carlos.
Late that afternoon, three men rode their horses along El Camino Real, on the way to El Pueblo de Los Angeles. Two of the men stopped. "Tell me, Pedro, did you ever think we would be deserting with Lieutenant Montoya?" Juan asked his comrade.
Pedro shook his head. "No Juan, I didn’t."
Carlos heard the men, stopped and turned to them They look just as comical in their civilian clothes as they did in their uniforms. "It’s just Carlos, now. No more ‘Lieutenant’. They'll use the same rope on me as they will on you two."
Juan laughed. "They'll have to catch us, first. And Mexico is a big place to hide."
Pedro slapped Juan on the back. "Si, amigos. And lots of Señoritas too."
"You two will have to go on without me. I am headed East." Carlos rode closer to the pair and shook their hands. He pulled on the reins and galloped away. Juan and Pedro turned their horses and headed south.
A few miles down the rode Carlos’ horse threw a shoe. He dismounted and walked his horse to the nearest hacienda and tied his horse to a hitching post. He started for the door when it opened and Tessa Alvarado stepped outside, wearing her riding clothes. "Why, Carlos, what brings you all the way out here?"
"Buenos dias, Señorita Alvarado. It seem that my horse has thrown a shoe."
Tessa walked out of the doorway and motioned for to a worker. "Tomas, please look after the Lieutenant’s horse.
"I will be more than happy to pay you for a new one." Carlos said.
"Nonsense, Carlos. That’s what friends are for." Tomas took the reins from Carlos and led the horse away to the stables.
Tessa saw the lump on Carlos’ head and smiled. "If you don't mind my asking, Carlos, where is your uniform?"
"Back in Santa Elena, along with the rest of my life."
"I am sorry to see that you’re leaving us again. I had hoped that you and Catalina might get back together, but I guess that is not possible. I imagine your uncle is very unhappy."
Carlos laughed. "Yes, you could say that."
Tessa smiled at him. "Come inside, Carlos. It is hot today. We can have some cold lemonade while you wait for your horse to be shoed."
"Gracias, Señorita. That would be most appreciated." Carlos noticed something lying on the ground. "Señorita, you must have dropped something."
Tessa stopped and turned around. She looked down and started to bend down to pick it up but Carlos had already bent down. Carlos smelled Tessa’s perfume and froze. I know that perfume, from the morning when the Queen met me on the trail as I was leaving town the last time. I was standing at the edge of the road holding my horses’ reins. The Queen was standing next to me. I remember saying ‘La Reina smells very lovely for so early in the morning.’ She told me ‘ The truth be known, it’s just a cheap perfume that the Queen wears. It beats the Hell out of smelling like horse sweat.
Carlos looked up at Tessa and at the red sash in his hand. Tessa reached down and retrieved her sash. "I'll take that, Carlos, if you don't mind." Carlos got to his feet and tried to speak but when he opened his mouth only a squeaky noise came out.
Tessa looked at him. "Was there something you were going to say, Carlos?"
Carlos cleared his throat. "Tessa Alvarado, you are the Queen of Swords."
She leaned towards him and smiled. "Congratulations, you found me."
"Are you going to kill me?"
"Why would I kill you? That is, unless of course you want me to do so." Carlos took a step back and she reached out and grabbed his arm. "Carlos, I am only joking. I know you would never betray me."
He smiled. "This is wonderful."
"How so?"
"Now, I can repay you for saving my life by going to my grave and keeping your secret safe. I hope that will be a long time from now."
She gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I am sure it will be, Carlos."
"Would you care for a second opinion on that?" Carlos looked over Tessa's shoulder and saw Doctor Helm standing in the doorway. Carlos gave Helm a very nervous smile. Helm walked towards Carlos and extended his hand to him. "I wish you nothing but the best, where ever that may be." The cheery smile with which he favored Carlos was not reassuring. Carlos had no doubt the good doctor would be happy to see the back of his erstwhile rival.
"Tessa, Uncle Luis would have a coronary if he knew." Carlos said, shaking his head.
She smirked. "I imagine he would."
"He does suspect you of being the Queen but he also suspects someone else."
Tessa raised her eyebrows. "Who would that be?"
"He believes that Vera Hidalgo maybe the Queen and that Captain Grisham is passing on information about his plans about her, or rather you. You know what I mean."
Tessa's mouth dropped open. "Now, you’re the one who is joking. Why would he suspect Vera? Our hair color is different and even our eyes are a different color."
"Someone informed him that she had purchased a large quantify of peroxide. He believes that she uses it as part of her disguise. As far as the difference in eye color, since I am the only one he has confided in, I didn’t have the heart to point out to him that her eyes are blue and yours are brown. I doubt that he even looked at your eyes while you two were fighting. Your costume is quite fetching. Besides, I would never help him with anything that might be used to harm you."
"And here I thought I had surprised you." She chuckled and shook her head.
The groom returned with his horse. Carlos took the reins and waited until the groom had departed.
Doctor Helm turned to Carlos. "So, where to now?"
Carlos put a foot into the stirrup and mounted. "Not very many people know this, but I am a citizen of the United States. The pirate ship I sailed on was actually an American ship and I was granted citizenship for my service. Later, I was offered a job with the Fourth Michigan Light Dragoons. I plan to take them up on their offer and that’s where I am going. I am headed for Detroit."
"It sounds like a lovely place. Please be careful." Tessa said.
"You are the one who needs to be careful, my Queen. I am afraid Uncle Luis won't stop until he has your head on a pike in the square. I pray that day never comes, but you know how stubborn we Montoyas can be. I pray also that someday you don't have to kill him. Then again, our destinies are not ours to choose."
Carlos smiled and raised his hand. "Well, I guess this is goodbye." His horse neighed as he pulled on the reins and urged him into a gallop.
Doctor Helm stood next to Tessa and both waved. They watched Carlos ride past her parent’s graves and over the rise. "Tessa, that was a nice touch dropping your sash like you did." Helm said.
"Yes, I thought so, too."
Helm looked at her and placed his arm around her waist. "So do you think he will ever return?"
"Who knows? Maybe someday. He has repaid his debt of honor to the Queen and can now put Santa Elena behind him to start a new life."
He drew her close to his side and squeezed her waist. "Who knows? Maybe we'll have to rescue you again someday."
She gave him a broad smile. "More than likely, it will be the other way around," she replied as they entered the hacienda and closed the door.
