Pak Phanang River Basin Royal Development Project

Watergate of the Pak Phanang River
- At the time, the Pak Phanang River Basin was seen as the rice bowl of southern Thailand covering 760,000
acres and encompassing Pak Phanang, Chien Yai, Hua Sai, Cha-Ot, Ron Phibun, Chulabhorn and Phra Phrom districts. Also included are some parts of Lan Sapha Dristrict of
Nakhon Si Thamarat, Khuan Khanun District of Phatthalung and Ranot Dristrict of
Songkhla.
Growing numbers of people in these areas, coupled with dwindling watershed, has rendered serious impact on the environment. Freshwater for the Pak Phanang River,
and tributaries, in the dry season, has dropped significantly.
Rice fields in the area are located below sea level allowing saline water to flow into the river and its tributaries causing great damage to agricultural areas,
resulting in low productivity. Most people in the area are poor and the problem required urgent attention.
On several occasions, His Majesty has given advice to solve problems at the Pak Phanang River Basin to help the people living in the area. The most importance
advice given by His Majesty on October 2, 1993, when members of the board of the Pak Phanang River Basin Royal Development Project were granted an audience,
suggested constructing a water gate about three kilometers from Pak Phanang District. His Majesty said the water gate would address problems of drought, flooding,
salinity and water-shortages for drinking and agriculture. His Majesty predicted this would require three years of construction work.
Much progress has been made with the Pak Phanang River Basin Royal Development Project with area being restored to original levels of fertility, helping to ease
the suffering of local people.
