The Faculty of Applied Technology offers a variety of NEW & REVISED Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Short Courses, developed for both professional and novice students alike.  Our Short Courses, delivered by the Computer Aided Design Resource Education (CADRE) centre are developed so that our students have a greater opportunity to excel in the increasingly critical areas of practice - documentation management, detailing and presentation.  They all extensively use and integrate the teaching, with material and resources on the Internet* and the Christchurch Polytechnic's StudentWeb Intranet.  The recommended prerequisites are for your guidance only, and may assist your development if you have no experience in CADD.

Introductory CADD Courses
Introduction to CADD in the Built Environment - CBEN100
What is Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)? An indtroductory course revealing the fundamentals about the basic hardware and software options for the Construction Industry.  How advancements in CADD technology are affecting the Construction Industry and redefining the future of information exchange.  "Hands on" introduction to the range of ArchiCAD™ & MicroStation™ CADD software applications.  Suitable for the absolute beginner in CADD.  Tuition in Windows NT.  No prerequisites.

• Introduction to Smartsketch™ - IMAG100
An introductory course on SmartSketch™, an exceptional and relatively inexpensive 2D drawing, concept and presentation design, CADD software designed for Win98 and WinNT, (employing OLE2), which is interoperable with AutoCAD™ and MicroStation™.  Intergraph SmartSketch is an easy-to-use, Windows-based design, drafting, and diagramming application. SmartSketch's parametric capabilities make design and drafting simple, and design modifications easy-to-manage. SmartSketch is CADD neutral, so you can use it with both AutoCAD™ (R14/2000) and MicroStation™. SmartSketch helps you work smarter, by delivering industry-specific templates and content for a host of disciplines. SmartSketch™ even delivers content based on specific business needs, allowing the designer to create Office Layouts, Flow charts, Organizational Charts, and Network Diagrams.  With its simple-to-learn and remember interface, anyone from office personnel to the practice manager can use SmartSketch™. SmartSketch™ is the straightforward choice for design, drafting, and diagramming.  Tuition in Windows NT.  No prerequisites.

• CADD in Professional Practice - CIPP100
Evolving standards and TQM [ISO 9000] demand a new approach to CADD in professional practice.  Do you need to extract the utmost from your CADD software, both in performance and management?  This introductory course covers CADD integration in the workplace, from schematics,  through to construction drawings highlighting the impact of 'objects' (OOP)  and OLE2, from Quicktime 4, Quicktime VR (QTVR)'s to Web-based Active Worlds™ effect on animation and virtual environments.  How to manage your productivity, with more appropriate methods and solutions, highlighting the marketing potential of multimedia and the Internet.  Suitable for practitioners and practice managers alike, with little experience in CADD and the Internet.  Tuiton on Windows NT.  No prerequisites.

Basic CADD Courses
• ArchiCAD Toolbox - ICAD100
This basic course covers the fundamental features of ArchiCAD™, a powerful and intuitive 3D Architectural and Construction modelling program, reviewed and explained.  How to get more out of your program, with assistance from the operating systems, including hints and tips for improved performance.  Suitable for any architectural or interior design practitioner or construction draughtsperson with little experience.  Tuition in Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite CBEN100.

• MicroStation Toolbox - MICS100
This basic course covers the fundamental features of MicroStation™, a most sophisticated and diverse 2D/ 3D drafting and modelling program, reviewed and explained.  How to get more out of your program, with assistance from the operating systems, including hints and tips for improved performance.  The course shall include a review of industry-specific companion programs, with special emphasis on the construction industry.  proposing the special Suitable for any architectural or interior design practitioner or construction draughtsperson with little experience.  Tuition in Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite CBEN100.
 

Intermediate CADD Courses
• ArchiCAD GDL - ICAD200
The hidden power of ArchiCAD™, Geometric Description Language (GDL™) is revealed in a simple and straightforward programme designed for creative exploration.  All modelling in ArchiCAD™ is created with GDL™.  This basic course will cover redefining existing library objects, the creation of unique furniture through to the creation of simple building components and details, as custom GDL's.  Suitable for applied ArchiCAD™ users and those desiring to increase their personal CADD skills, with some experience. Tuition in Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite ICAD100.

• MicroStation MDL - MICS200
The hidden power of the MicroStation™ range of products, MicroStation Development language(MDL™) is revealed in a simple and straightforward programme designed for creative exploration.  Everything in MicroStation is created with MDL™.  This basic course will cover the the creation of custom menus, redefining the graphic user interface (GUI) through to 'project controls' and modelling with MDL™.  Suitable for applied MicroStation™ users and those desiring to increase their personal CADD skills, with some experience. Tuition in Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite MICS100.

• ArchiCAD Presentation - ICAD300
This intermediate course is for those who desire to market their developments in housing, commercial or high-rise, to their clients who desire the best in graphic presentation and appeal.  How to present 2D renderings with 'natuarl media' software, progressing to introductory animations with Quicktime 4, OpenGL, Quicktime Virtual Reality (QTVR™) and Art*lantis.  Suitable for those with existing ArchiCAD™ experience, and a need to establish conceptual and finished quality presentations.  Tuition in Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite ICAD200.

• MicroStation Presentation - MICS300
This intermediate course is for those who desire to market their developments whether (architectural, landscape or modelling) to their clients in the most efficient and practical manner.  Managing information in 3D with object 'tags' and linkages.  The future of MicroStation J™ related products and the future of Java-based applications for MicroStation™; practical application of links to relational database systems (RDBM's) such as ORACLE™, using Web-based applications and examples.  How to benefit from the supremely enhanced rendering features available with the MicroStation™ family of products. Suitable  for those with existing MicroStation™ experience and a need to establish conceptual and finished presentations.  Tuition on Windows NT.  Recommended prerequisite MICS200.
