Addendum to the
Strategic Development Fund
Submission
for the development of the

Virtual Environmental Design & Animation

Short Course

VEDA - Original Proposal | Appendix 1 | Appendix 2

The following is a revised submission to the original VEDA proposal

"The Training is directed toward imagination, fantasy and inventiveness, a basic conditioning the ever-changing industrial scene, to the technology-in-flux ...The last step in this technique is the emphasis on integration through a conscious search for relationships. The intuitive working mechanics of the genius gives a clue to this process. The unique ability of the genius can be approximated by everyone if only its essential feature be apprehended: the flashlike act of connecting elements not obviously belonging together ...If the same methodology were used generally in all fields we have the key to our age - seeing everything in relationship." - Laslo Maholy Nagy

Frank " ..Gehry had difficulty in conveying his fluid design ideas to contractors using conventional architectural drawings. Now he uses 3-D modelling software called Catia originally developed for the aerospace industry. The approach proved its worth when Italian steel contractor Pernmasteelisa was able to build a full-size mock up of the Barcelona fish (for the Olympic Village) using the 3-D computer model after failing six times using conventional architectural drawings."- The International Communique,

"In projects such as this one, the greatest obstacle, is often met even before the workstation is powered up.  It has todo with getting everyone-the producers, the director-comfortable with the ides that CGI can do this. It's notuncommon, he explains, for people to think that live action should be used for everything and CGI... shouldonlybeusedif camera shots are not feasible.
That's a trap, because people don't know what's possible or can't imaginewhat's possible.
Just getting people to realize that we can do just about anything if we put our minds to it is the true hard part."
- Jeremy Birn as quoted by Diana Phillips Mahoney,

MTV's New Baby
CGW (Computer Graphics World), USERFOCUS, November 1996

"People wonder why all this feels so intellectual, rational and mechanic. It is because designers have not gotten in there yet to invest this world with humanity.  My finger is pointing at them.  It is your turn.  The technologists are done.  We have given you a foundation, and now it is up to you to build on that foundation."

Update
Since the original 'Virtual Environmental Design & Animation, Short Course' (VEDA) proposal was tabled, over three months have passed. In the intervening period some additions and restructuring have developed as a result of the more generous offers by competing vendors, as well as recognition to other emerging interests within the Polytechnic. This addendum to the original proposal suggests a strategy that:

As the Faculty of Applied Technology has at 7/3/97 proposed to "explore the possibilities of moving Architectural Draughting, Building & Quantity Surveying and Architectural CAD to the city campus along with Interior Design." Exploring the relationship and "the synergy between this programme (the proposed Interior Design degree), Architectural Draughting and the CAD suites at Sullivan Avenue", will have an impact on the outcome of this submission.

As it currently stands, the proposed move does at least propose a positive common purpose between the primary disciplines that are parties to this submission (NZCAD, Interior Design and Art & Design)

4
As this proposal deals with solutions that are literally at the cutting edge of 'digital education', change and enhancement are inevitable. Thus, it with a desire to refine our performance, related to our collective 'needs' (elucidated in the original proposal) that the following addendum has been submitted.

Contents
The original 'spirit and intent' of the VEDA proposal remain unchanged as do the following headings, other than those marked with marked with an asterisk (*) that are attached to this addendum:

The following addenda to the original VEDA proposal are herewith submitted for your approval:

3.00A Establishment Costs

The establishment costs of these Short Courses will be based on both Course Development Costs including Expert Tutoring for Existing Staff, as well as Software & Hardware Costs.

3.10A Short Course Development Costs

3.20A Software & Hardware Costs

Software  Hardware

3.30A Staged Implementation

At the current date of writing this addendum no staged implementation costings had been had been sought, pending approval of the proposed VEDA Objectives.

4.30A Real Income

If it is assumed that the EFTS funding is in the 'B' Category [inc. Architecture (non-degree); Computing; Fine Arts etc.] of $10,210 pa, then 3.8 x $10,210 = $38,798 pa in Income.1

10.00A Support

The following additional academics have since read the original proposal and given their support for this programme:

Faculty of Applied Technology

Stephen Williamson, Cheryl Fowler, Fay Lowden, Brian Heward.

Faculty of Media Arts

Gray Hodgkinson, Paul Norris, Anton Tritt.
