Pellucidar is a world that exists within the hollow Earth some 500 miles below our feet. The has an inner sun, the physics of which are unknown though many theories have been proposed, the most viable is a stable wormhole to the Sun.
Pellucidar has two large openings at the poles which connect it to the outer Earth and through which constant migrations of biota are allowed to travel, colonizing the inner world with a variety of life, many of which became extinct on Earth, and also allowing these ‘extinct’ forms to occasionally return to the outer world, giving rise to legends of ‘living fossils’ such as the Coelocanth of Madagascar, the Brontosaurus of Zaire, the Neanderthal of Russia and China and the Bigfoot of North America.
Civilization in Pellucidar is mainly Neolithic though there is one large nation which is Bronze-Age and a number of Spanish Pirates entered to create the Korsar civilization.
Once entering Pellucidar, evolution continued thus creating variations in the original stock such as a gliding stegosaur, a saber-tooth human with prehensile tail and intelligent pterosaurs which were the dominant species until the arrival of David Innes in the early 20th century.
