Venus is the next world within the Orbit of Earth and is covered with a thick cloud layer that effectively reflects light and heat to provide a hot and humid, but inhabitable environment for those who live upon the planet.
Although human, evolution has produced many non-human sentients such as ape-men, bird-men, omeba-men and many others. The humans though possess the most advanced technology but were conquered by their own lower classes who did not possess the intelligence required to maintain the technology, thus Amtor is a world in a state of technical decline.

MAPS

The most curious part of Amtor cartography is that the locals believe that the planet is a bowl floating in a sea of magma, protected by a ring of ice at the rim. This in their maps, the true south pole is considered to be the equator and the true equator is considered to be the south pole. Their scientists have come up with a unique mathematical formula to explain the discrepancies of the actual distances.

This is the map transmitted to Burroughs by Carson Napier during his ill-fated trip to Mars which ended up on Venus.
