If you missed the Picnic, you missed a fun time - good food - lot of bird talk and a super raffle. We want to extend our thanks to the entire Mocko family - who really knocked themselves out! Big Jim was the chef and spent the whole time over a hot BBQ. We extend our compliments to the Chef.
On the subject of food, Many thanks to Chuck for the terrific Spaghetti feed he donated for the June meeting.
NOW is the time to start planning for the Feather Show to be held Sept 12 & 13 at the Mayfield Mall (Map in next newsletter). Pick out those birds soon (if you can find any that aren't moulting). They must be 1981 birds, except for the exotics, which can be any age.
PROGRAM: Information & discussion of the Feather Show - mainly for those new members not yet familiar with this type of show.
RAFFLE Frank Tavares will donate a bird. Only one sign-up for this meeting. If anyone wants to bring a bird - it will be appreciated. Bring other things too.
Don't forget to contact Ruth Mitchell to place an Ad in the Catalogue.
From our SHOW MANAGER:
Hey, you B.T.O's - Help us fatten the "Kitty". For a $25. contribution

It was requested at the June Meeting that the nestling food recipes be put in the Newsletter. What is included or excluded in anyone's nestling food is based on what is available to the birds in their regular diet, so Pat McMullen has provided copies of her feeding routine, including the nestling food. Now how about the rest of you? Let's have a variety of feeding routines so can all learn. Not only canaries, hookbills, finches, etc.
Pat also distributed to the members an article she wrote about her results in treating and saving a canary that went light. It was very informative and will be a great help to people that have lost these young birds. She is to be complimented for her dedication in saving the birds and also thanked for writing, making copies and distributing them to the members.

Normal Canary Feeding Routine
by Pat McMullan
In cage at all times:
Serve once daily:
Occasionally:
For Conditioning: Start January 1 with
Canary Corn Bread:
Jiffy corn MUFFIN mix + 2 eggs + 1/3 cup milk + ¼ to ½
cup of Petamine + handful of Blue Poppy seeds + 1 envelope of
unflavored gelatin. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 min.
Nestling food:
Crumbs made by putting the corn bread through a grinder + Gerber's Hi
Protein baby cereal with apple & orange + a sprinkle of dry, unflavored
gelatin and (this year) a sprinkle of vitamin B12 powder.
A.M. feeding = add a very small slice of hard boiled egg and grind it all up together.
P.M. feeding = leave out the hard boiled egg and ad instead a little rape sprouts to each dish in addition to the greens which are given at mid-day.
Note: When canary parents are being stubborn about feeding, they WILL feed spinach.
I put 'em up to breed on 3/15. First chick hatches on 4/8 every year. I stop the iodine after the last egg of the first clutch is laid unless a pair seems to have a fertility problem.
