PLEASE NOTE THESE SWITCHED SIGNALS
January Program: We'll start the year off right by dividing up into main interest groups to discuss mutual problems and solutions with the birds.
Nikkie McClatchie & Glenn Mitchell will lead the hookbill group. Glenn, as you know, has much experience with all types of birds. Nikkie has recently gained a lot of valuable experience with the parrot family.
Bud Reller will moderate the finch group. He raises tons of Zebras.
Glenn Corlew & Pat McMullan, with an assist from Margaret Roche if her house guests don't keep her away, will lead the canary folk.
These brain picking sessions always produce a gem or two for me, don't miss out on collecting your share!
Scary news item: That rear-ender Joe Gordon was involved in back in November did more than hurt his back for awhile. After progressively more severe headaches, somebody finally had sense enough to do a brain scan and find his subdural hematoma and evacuate it. In English, that means that the accident rattled his brain cage, tore a small blood vessel which did a slow leak over a period of weeks. Having no outlet, the blood just kept forming a bigger and bigger clot and pressing on the brain. Surgery was done Christmas Eve at El Camino Hosp. where Joe still is as of this writing but should be out by the time you get this letter. 'tis said that God only tests His friends. If that's true, Joe must be well loved indeed! Sorry you missed out on the Holidays, Joe, but maybe getting rid of pain and having your life saved was a pretty good Christmas present! It certainly is one of our best ones!

Canary BANDS: are in and can be purchased, remember that you MUST have paid your dues in order to get club bands. Order from Leonard.
DUES: $18.00 per family. Due and payable NOW! Looky here, folks, lemme 'splain it to you for a second. Nikkie (as membership chairman) compiles the membership list over the next few weeks. Then, in March, she types up the new list and gets it to me, all neatly alphabetized. The master copy of the names and addresses is then taken to the printer and TWELVE SETS of address labels are printed up for the year for the newsletter. The sheets with the sticky labels on won't go into the typewriter without pulling the labels off. If some folks renew after that date, I have to sit down and write a year's worth of labels by hand in order to avoid missing anyone. This year, I wind up the year with TWO pages of hand written labels, in no particular order and difficult to check on. When you start your new year right by clearing up bills, PLEASE write out a check for our dues and get 'em in quick? I do get cranky when writing out the darn things by hand, besides, I've been known to make a mistake! (Hard to believe, I know!)
AD: Jim & Sue Mocko 6 pairs Bourkes; 1 pair of Scarlet Chested; 1 male Turquoisine
AD: Allen Thompson has 30 stainless steel (Pacific) canary breeders, completely equipped including nests and nesting material holders. $20.00 each. That's a bargain.
Financial report for the year, with breakdown of the main events, is included in this letter. With a lot of hard work and a lot of cooperation and a lot of belt tightening, we've managed to pull out of the crisis in which we started 1983. We're back on track but we can't just sit back and relax or we'll be in trouble again. Suspect we can do away with the belt tightening measures, at least some of 'em. Don't forget to bring something for the raffle in January. We'll pass around the sign up sheet then for the rest of the year.
AD: Pat McMullan will bring along all the canary hens she can carry to the January meeting unless we're having a bad storm that day. If you need hens, please bring along a cage. Also have (a few) males suitable for breeding.
NOTE: Since the next Board meeting will be held just prior to the general meeting in February, please get any news or ads or other info to me by phone or mail by January 30 for the February newsletter. Thanks. Gotta stop now and go to press or this one will come out after the meeting! See you then.
