Santa Clara Valley Canary & Exotic Bird Club
ANNUAL FEATHER SHOW & EXHIBITION
Sept. 12 & 13th 1981
Mayfield Mall, Mountain View
Many thanks to Bill Cooper, Show Manager for the Feather Show. The Feather Show is for baby birds hatched in 1981. Exceptions are made for hookbills, which can be any age. Birds should be shown in standard show cages, however, the birds will not be marked down if in other than show cages. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Bring as many birds as you want - it is good show cage training for your birds. Be sure your cages are clean, birds nails clipped and get your birds used to the show cage before the show. Cover bottom of cage with plenty of seed. There will be guards on duty all day & night. Gates will be closed at 6 P.M. Saturday and not opened until noon Sunday. However, you may get in earlier Sunday to check your birds by the entrance noted on map. Members will classify their own birds - help will be available if needed. Check your birds in between 9 a.m. & 10 a.m. Judging will start at 10:30 a.m.

We are sad to announce that we have lost another member of our club. Tessie Vassello's health has been fragile for some time and that lovely lady went on to an easier life this month. Our hearts go out to Joe at this time.

Pat McMullen received a tip from Martha Medlar of Oxnard, Ca. which should be of interest to all the hookbill folk among us. She says:
"For the past year I've been using Blair's Nutrition Center Acidophilus capsules - using just a tiny sprinkle of the powder out of a capsule. This has been used for the very first feeding of a chick having to be fed right from the incubator. Usually just one tiny amount in the first feeding seems to start the benign bacteria in the digestive tract that is needed for proper digestion. At times a 2nd application is necessary - but that is all I've ever had to use. At times also when hand feeding a chick (we're talking about psittacines in all of these cases) I've found a touch of the Acidophilus gets them over a small digestive problem and takes care of a bit of "sour crop" syndrome. This is when the chick has been fed for a while by the parents and then I take over about at the 3rd week of life."
Martha conducts four short term courses per year on breeding birds at Oxnard College. Three evenings for a total of 6 hours class time. If anyone is planning to be down that way, it might be interesting to take part.
