Q wasn't really evil, he was more like a spoiled child. Q was a member of the Q Continuim, a race of immortal omnipotent beings that intellectually were far advanced than humans. The biggest evil deed he did was when he teleported the Enterprise into another quadrant and forced them to take on the Borg for the first time. In Q's defense I must add that the crew of the USS Enterprise D would have been destroyed if Q hadn't saved them. Q enjoyed his mental sparring with Captain Picard, just as much as he still does with Captain Janeway of the USS Voyager. Q's prank's finally caught up with him when he was thrown out of the Q Continuim. Captain Picard was responsible for getting him reinstated.
