FILM REVIEWS

Film: "La Cérémonie" (1995).
Claude Chabrol and Ruth Rendell are united in this class-riven tale of an illiterate housekeeper (Sandrine Bonnaire) working for a bourgeois family (Madame is played by Jacqueline Bisset) in northern France. Her disability means she is treated as a fool by the family - who, initially, are unaware that she can't read - so she seeks solace in the friendship of the local gossiping post mistress (Isabelle Huppert). When the family finds out, after Bonnaire has tried to blackmail the daughter, the film builds inexorably to a violent climax.
