FILM REVIEWS

Film: "A Star is Born" (1954).
George Cukor's 1954 definitive musical remake of William Wellman's classic stars Judy Garland as the young singer torn apart by her rise to fame and her love for her Hollywood actor partner (James Mason). His prospects are dimming as rapidly as hers are beginning to shine, and it's a brilliant study in the cruelty that lurks beneath fame's fickle surface, highlighting how often the "wrong" emotions override the "right" ones, as Mason's fading actor becomes bitterly resentful of Garland's success. Vocally, Garland rarely matched this performance, and both actors are at their peak in what turns out to be an emotional epic for them and us.
