GEOCITIES FILE MANAGER

I. INTRODUCTION
The GeoCities File Manager is the hub of your GeoCities web site. All your files are stored there. The File Manager has a selection of web site management tools that let you create pages and subdirectories; upload, rename, view and delete files, and more.
When you join GeoCities, your personal File Manager is created for you. You may look at it by entering the File Manager from a number of locations in the Member's Area. You can also access the File Manager from the GeoBuilder File menu.
When you enter the File Manager, you will see a list of all the files connected to your web site. This is where your files are stored and where you work on HTML web pages. Below the file list is a group of buttons for managing your files and creating and editing web pages. You can also edit your GeoCities profile and access other GeoCities tools, but I want to focus on the web site tools here.
GeoBuilder users can use all the File Manager tools for their pages EXCEPT EDIT and
SAVE.

Why not Edit and Save? As I mentioned in the GeoBuilder Overview, GeoBuilder uses a
high-level, unique code format to create and save pages. When a GeoBuilder page is
opened with a standard HTML text editor the unique code format is changed to standard
format for editing. If you save the GeoBuilder page with the standard HTML editor the
format change becomes permanent and cannot be changed back to GeoBuilder format.
Think of it like saving a text document you created in Word or Wordpad that has Times
New Roman as the font and has several text sizes and colors, underlining, and bold text. If you save this document as a basic .txt document all the formatting will be removed: colors, Times New Roman, bold, underline. If you open it again in Word or Wordpad, you will see only plain text with no formatting. It may even show symbols where paragraph spacing used to be. There is no way to regain the original formatting except to start over.

So, looking at it in this way, you can see that if you open your GeoBuilder page in any
other editor and save it with that editor, your whole page is permanently corrupted, even if you made not one change to the page! The editor you used would have to have the ability to save in GeoBuilder format to preserve the original code.

II. THE FILE MANAGER
There are several ways to enter the File manager. Two are:
The GeoCities Home page
The GeoBuilder File menu

ENTER THE FILE MANAGER
1. Sign in at the GeoCities Welcome Page
2. Open the File Manager from one of the above locations
3. Check the box for each file type you want to view
4. Click on the Enter the File Manager button

DO NOT EDIT GEOBUILDER PAGES WITH A FILE MANAGER EDITOR,
even though the opening paragraph in the File Manager leads you to believe you can.
