Hackers
The term hacker has been misused by the media since the early 1980's.
Hackers are totally different people than they have been represented as;
one of the ethics held to by the truest hackers is to allow no harm to
come as a result of their actions.
The classic hackers were explorers, those whose sole interest was learning
as much as possible about the electronic systems that fascinated them.
Some hackers might take excursions into other computer systems, and took
the utmost care to disturb nothing; however, this was not
their focus. Their goal was not destruction, nor profit, nor revenge; their
goal was the pursuit of knowledge and the pursuit of conquest. A true hacker
believes that information should be free, and that pushing the envelope
of what is possible should be a daily occurence. They believe that every
system is ripe for improvement, whether the system is a computer,
a program, a set of traffic lights, or a government.
If you want to learn more about hackers and who they really are,
pick up these books:
-
Hackers
by Steven Levy (especially Part 1)
-
The Hacker Crackdown
by Bruce Sterling - available bound
or on the Web, and is literary freeware!
-
The Devouring Fungus by Karla Jennings.

The teco Text Editor
There are those who might wonder why anyone would want to edit in
TECO. I can't speak as a TECO fanatic, or even a practiced TECO user, but
it appears to me that there isn't an editor anywhere that can match its
power to size ratio - that is, its capabilities are extensive while its
size is small. After all, EMACS was written in
TECO to start with. However, that's not enough to make me give up
vi.

hacker!).

Be warned that some of the more dubious sites will take
a proactive anti-Internet-Explorer view, and may activate
