I was born 1911 in Wheaton, Illinois USA. As an astronomer and radio engineer, I built the world's first radio telescope, and was largely responsible for the early development of radio astronomy, which created an entirely new science in the study of the universe. When in 1933 a fellow radio engineer Karl Jansky announced that he had discovered radio signals from the stars, I attempted but failed to adapt my short wave radio receiver to pick up interstellar radio waves. However in 1937 I built the first dish antenna measuring 9.4 metres in diameter that served as the only radio telescope in the world until after World War 2. With this I created the first radio maps of sky by 1942, using short-wave signals.I later headed the Experimental Microwave Research centre in Washington, D.C. and installed a radio telescope in Hawaii in 1951.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
September 1941, The Australian Broadcasting Commission today reported that despite lengthy testing of many people for positions as radio announcers less than 1% of those interviewed were found suitable.
(Brians comment: It's unfortunate that ouw Wednesday net controller Bill (VK3MMM) was not available in 1941, With his dulcet tones that flow past his golden tonsils., he would have been a certainty for the job.)
NAVCOM2000
Throughout Australia and Territories there are many Naval Reserve Cadet Units. These units comprise of many young (13018 year old) people who are very dedicated and put many hours weekly into their training, based on Navy practices. Communications are part of their training. Clubs and individual operators are invited to assist these units in a Jota like event on the weekend of 15/16 July. The exercise will run for 24 hours from noon on the 15th until noon on the 16th. This then allows any overseas units wishing to participate in NAVCOMM2000 and communicate with Australian units to do so. Melbourne and region units are: TS Barwon, Geelong, Williamstown HSc, TS Voyager - Williamstown, TS Melbourne - Surrey Hills, Hampton Park HSc, TS Tingiara - Crib Point Source: WIA Victoria News
