DO YOU KNOW ?

Club Post Office Box

I am an American physicist and Nobel laureate; in fact I became the first scientist to win two Nobel Prizes in the same category (A big clue.)  Born in Madison, Wisconsin, I was educated at the Universities of Wisconsin and Princeton.  As a research physicist at the Bell Telephone Laboratories (another and last big clue) I was a member of the team that developed a tiny electronic device capable of performing most of the functions of the vacuum tube. And no my name is not William Shockley nor is it Walter Brattain as neither went on to win a second Nobel Prize in the same field.

As usual the answer is on the last page.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

"From the Age newspaper June 2 1924". England spoke to Australia last night by wireless. It is the first time a wireless conversation (as opposed to telegraphy) has been held between two countries, or over so vast a distance.
The wireless pioneer Guglielmo Marconi said: "I am satisfied that it will be easy to conduct conversations over great distances" There will be no distance that radio will not cover"
The transmission was made by the Amalgamated wireless Co. and was between Poldhu, Cornwall and Sydney.
