six oclock shadow

Fun with Shadows

by Roxanne

Experimenting with Photoshop 5's layer effects, I came up with some cool shadows. This one is the 6 o'clock shadow, or whatever time it is when the shadows get long..and here is how easy it was to create.

1.Create a new file large enough for your type. I used 400 X 250.

2.Click on the type tool and type your text. I used Benguiat Bk BT at 90 points.
Right click on the layer and choose effects, then inner bevel, I left all settings at default except for depth. Increase it to 20. Then use the drop down arrow to go to drop shadow effect dialog box. increase the distance to 30...click OK
.

3.In the layers palette, right click on the "T" in the text layer and choose render layer from the menu..

4.Click layer effects, create layers [ fig 1 ]. The effects split into 3 layers, the bevel on top in 2 layers and the drop shadow below.[ fig 2 ]

5.In the layers palette menu, choose merge group [ fig 3 ]..The inner bevel layers will drop back into the text, but the drop shadow remains on its own layer. Your layers palette should now look like [ fig 4 ]. Now that the shadow is on its own layer, you can edit it easily.
