The Bothy

A Bothy is a small miners hut. This one was situated about 5 miles (7-8km) from the nearest village, on a ridge overlooking Arkengarthdale in North Yorkshire.

the bothy in the fog There was no electricity, running water or decent toilets (chemical toilets in an outhouse). Lighting was from two old gas lights. Cooking was done on a large bottled gas cooker and warmth was provided by a large open log fire. Just the thing to come in to from walking around the cold and muddy dales!

The weather was proper British outdoor weather. It rained everyday, It was misty and foggy, and even worse if you didn't have decent waterproof clothing and a warm sleeping bag!!

open Fire The weekend was about working as a team member. From team games to skill games, cross county running and hill walking (well route marching) enjoying ourselves and getting to know each other more even identifying people by their snores!

The weekend was a success. In a few weeks its back to walking and camping for the Duke of Edinburgh award.
