The main gigs Slink have played, from first to most recent...
Date: 14/03/03
Venue: Knox Academy School Hall
Other Bands: Aquinas and D-Laid
Comments: Our very first gig was part of a fund raiser called "Lainey Aid", the proceeds of the gig were donated to a cancer charity. I would like to say that before we went onstage we were calm, cool and collected, but basically, we were sh*tting ourselves. Despite hardly being able to play, due to us all shaking so badly, we still managed to rock through a great set and blew away everybody's misconceptions that we sucked.
Date: 21/03/03
Venue: The Bridge Centre
Other Bands: Smuk and D-Laid
Comments: This gig was also part of "Lainey Aid". As it was so soon after our first gig, our track list was basically the same as the previous week's and so was the response: Excellent. Everybody in the Bridge Center was in high spirits and when we opened up with "Twist" there didn't seem to be anybody who wasn't head-banging.
Date: 01/06/03
Venue: The Corn Exchange
Other Bands: Smuk, Daisy Nights and The Vision
Comments: The first gig which we headlined was also our shortest. Due to "certain events" involving Jonny, Vince and a flimsy table, our set list was cut quite considerably. This didn't stop us rocking out to the (unusually small) crowd and receiving a great reception. What also made this gig interesting was the fact that some of Slink were hungover from a party they went to a few days previously and certain members could be seen retching in the fountain outside the Corn Exchange throughout the evening. Our first CD was also put on sale here.
Date: 11/09/03
Venue: The Bridge Centre
Other Bands: Pummel and The 12 Inch Taxidermists, I think
Comments: I've asked around and nobody seems to remember what really happened. Before the gig, we hung around with Pummel, who were headlining, and constantly walked to Tesco and back to waste time. The only problem which could be remembered was the PA messing up during our first song and giving huge amounts of feedback. I think we went and got drunk right after our set, which explains the haziness of our memories. If anyone has any idea what happened, don't hesitate to contact us.
Date: 25/10/03
Venue: Boggs Holdings Hall
Other Bands: The 12 Inch Taxidermists
Comments: Here, Slink played to their smallest crowd ever. This is just aswell, as most of us were too drunk to know what was going on and kept staggering around on stage. Our bassist was replaced by a friend called Joe H, as he couldn't make it to the Boggs Hall. We were playing at somebody's party and even though there was a fair turnout of people, hardly anyone came inside to watch. Although we constantly asked for a five minute break to sober up, we stupidly used the five minutes to try and drink even more. Vince forgot some words, Jonny kept on hitting Smally with his sticks instead of the drums, Smally lost his guitar when it was around his neck and Chris kept on missing his strings. Nobody seemed to notice.
Date: 19/12/03
Venue: The Bridge Centre
Other Bands: The Vision
Comments: It was jinxed from the beginning. Usually before gigs, our last practise and our sound-check are the worst we've played, yet in the run up to this one, we were playing perfectly. As the Vision played, Slink stayed backstage playing cards, arguing about The Beatles and rushing to the toilet every 5 minutes because they drank too much water. Chris also bought Cherry Pop Tarts, which he couldn't eat as they contained gelatine and which nobody else would eat because there was no toaster to heat them in. As for the actual gig, the crowd was the worst in a long time and everyone seemed to be stuck to the wall by some unknown force. Not many people were willing to go infront of the stage for us or The Vision except from various drunk people at various times of the night. Certain Slink members believe this was one of the worst gigs they have played, yet some very nice people have congratulated them on a good night's playing. Water from a bubble machine was also spilt on Smally's dad's extension cable. Smally's dad's opinion on the incident is yet to be heard.
Date: 19/03/04 (that's basically a year since our very first gig!)
Venue: The Bridge Centre
Other Bands: Libido and Owsley Sunshine
Comments: Ok, so Owsley Sunshine never actually turned up until everybody had left, due to being stuck in traffic, making Slink the unofficial headliners of the night. There was no stage either, which worked out well because there was more room for the bands to play on the floor. Of our original 9 song set list, 5 songs were our own and even though there was no movement from the crowd as we played them, there was some nice ego-boosting praise about our music afterwards. A big thankyou to those people, you know who you are and you made our night. The only song that had a visible mosh was a cover of Bodies by Drowning Pool, where the pit was rough enough to send Big Mike sprawling to the floor (this is something quite unusual as Big Mike is BIG). After a few extra covers it became obvious that Owsley Sunshine wouldn't be showing up in time and the gig unexpectedly came to an end. Our final song was a little solo number by Roman, called "That's the way the cookie crumbles". Sums everything up beautifully.
