  What is the GMDSS ?

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System is a
new and efficient maritime radiocommunication system
for distress and safety purposes that was adopted by
IMO in 1988 in the form of amendments to the
International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
(SOLAS '74) and entered into force on 1 February 1992.
The basic concept for the GMDSS is that search and
rescue authorities ashore as well as shipping in the
immediate vicinity of the ship in distress will be rapidly
alerted so that they can assist in a coordinated search
and rescue operation with the minimum of delay.
The GMDSS also provides navigational and
meteorological warnings. This system ensures the
highest degree of reliability in the reception of distress calls in any part of the world as it relies heavily on automation
and communication equipment easy to use. By 1999 all vessels must comply with the GMDSS.

   The multimedial software.

The CD-ROM is issued in four languages (Italian, English, French, Flemish) and video images,
animation, sounds and graphics offer all the necessary information foracorrect use of the system.
It consists of six chapters (each of which is in turn subdivided into several chapters) and it allows to:

  • schematize the GMDSS structure

  • know the functional requirements

  • know the four sea areas and the relevant
    carriage requirements

  • know the Gmdss specific guidelines and
    send out a message accordingly

  • be able to read correctly the messages received

  • select and set working the most appropriate
    means of communication and distress.
