What is the GMDSS ?The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System is anew and efficient maritime radiocommunication system for distress and safety purposes that was adopted by IMO in 1988 in the form of amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS '74) and entered into force on 1 February 1992. The basic concept for the GMDSS is that search and rescue authorities ashore as well as shipping in the immediate vicinity of the ship in distress will be rapidly alerted so that they can assist in a coordinated search and rescue operation with the minimum of delay. The GMDSS also provides navigational and meteorological warnings. This system ensures the | |
highest degree of reliability in the reception of
distress calls in any part of the world as it relies heavily on automation
and communication equipment easy to use. By 1999 all vessels must comply with the GMDSS. |
