Andrew Peredun Wins Fall Soo 98

This is the first chess tournament to be held in the Soo for a number of years. It is great to see that Kenn Filikins has established a chess league and has a good core group started in the Soo. The Fall Soo 1998 was an unrated tournament held on Sat. Oct. 24th with a time limit of game in 50 minutes. It was an international event with a number of Canadian players participating. There were four cash prizes awarded: Andrew Peredun (2104), a 18 year old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, won First Prize with a perfect 4 wins. Terry Rowlinson (also of Sault, ONT) and Rob Roos (Sports Editor from the Sault Evening News and Assistant Director of the Tournament) tied for Second Place. Brian Pahn (a 13 year old from Sault, MI) won the unrated division and played very well.

The league is planning to host two more unrated tournaments before next spring. They run these unrated tournaments with the hope of creating more interest in Chess in the Eastern UP. They may host one in Sault, ONT. Their next 4-round Saturday Tournament will be the end of January or the first of February.

From here both players were in a time crunch with the "game in 50 minutes" time limit. Both players played quickly without writing down their moves. Black won as White resigned. 0-1
