Randy Schmidt wins the U.P. Quick Championship

The U.P. Quick Championship was held on December 7, 1996 in Iron Mountain. There was a fair showing of players from Michigan and Wisconsin to this free chess tournament. Randy Schmidt, from Green Bay, Wisconsin, took an undefeated first with a score of 5 wins. He received a trophy for his play. Justin Ceterski won the top U.P. Junior trophy for his performance. With the time limit being only a game in 15 minutes, there were many time scrambles. This made the games much more interesting and sometimes forced the winning side to lose a game or two.
