Mother

By Barbara Yoder

I sit back and cherish the days,
The days of me and you.
I look ahead and know for sure
You'll always be there, too.

There are times I look around me,
In times of great distress,
And I see it was at those times
When you were at your best.

Powerful, stronger than steel
More than anyone knows.
That is you, my mommy,
As sweet as a summer rose

Continuing on our journey,
Our lives, happy and true,
The days we'll spend together yet
Are numbered way too few.

I'm still looking for the answers
That one day I know we'll find.
I'll not love you for the rest of your life;
But for the rest of mine.

You've always stayed by my side, mom,
Through the mistakes I made.
And you never stopped loving me.
To God we turned and prayed.

Our love will linger here on Earth
Long after we are gone.
For our timeless bond will live
in mothers and daughters who're strong.

(Barb, the mother of five, reflected on her own mother's role in her life with this poem. She wrote it for her mom, Rose Ann Schleis, on Rose Ann's birthday.)
